You know what they say- a good neighbor is found treasure. But, this doesn’t necessarily only apply to your next-door neighbors.
It is priceless to know that you live in a community where, in a time of need, a complete stranger will step in and help you without waiting for anything in return.
And, although some might say that today people are too busy minding their own business, there are still those who would go above and beyond to help a fellow human in need. In this case, a mother and her 15-month-old toddler.
Alexandra Alexin of New Rochelle, New York, had sent her boy to daycare and gone to work, just like any other morning. She had no idea that would be one of the hardest and scariest days of her life so far.
When she went to pick him up in the afternoon, there was a snowstorm, which caused major traffic problems in the area.
Ice and snow had covered the roads around her neighborhood by the time she headed back home.
“I was panicked, complete and utter panic,” Alexin told CBS New York.
She tried to get home, but she had no luck. As she started realizing that she was stuck in the snow, she freaked out.
“Unfortunately, the only two routes we could take, I couldn’t make it up the hills with my car,” she said. “So I was spinning out in the middle of the road, freaking out with him in the back seat.”
She tried to quickly think of a solution. The only thing that came to mind was that she and her child would be safe at a shopping plaza close by.
“I went into the grocery store because at least it was nice and warm and had food,” she said.
Asking her husband for help was out of the question, since it took him more than five hours to get home from the Bronx. Neighbors and friends couldn’t help either for the same reason.
Soon, she realized she was trapped at the grocery store, and that’s when she burst into tears.
“I ended up being in the grocery store in tears and luckily, this incredible family, they stopped and asked me what was wrong,” Alexin said.
A family of complete strangers approached her and asked what was wrong. When she narrated her story, they offered to drive her and her child home.
Indeed, Alexin left her car and followed them into their car along with her toddler.
“They got me through these horrendous streets and they got the two of us home and it was phenomenal,” the mother said.
It was only after Alexin and her child were back home, warm and safe, that she realized that she didn’t even know the names of the people who had just saved them.
She told CBS that she wanted to trace them and thank them for being so kind to her.
“I would love to tell them thank you, and that I am forever in their debt. They are the type of people that I want to believe our community is full of.”
