If you are not into old movies, then you only need to have seen the popular film The Notebook in order to get an idea of what a young couple looked like in the 1940s.
However, it seems that living in 2022 does not mean that you can’t look like you’re living eighty years ago. At least this is true for a British couple who lives in Bilston, West Midlands, and has a vintage lifestyle inspired by the 1930s and 1940s.
28-year-old Ruth Shelley, and her 27-year-old partner, Robert Oestmann share a love of old-fashioned stuff. In a way, this is what brought them closer and, according to the couple, it is one of the reasons that they have such a strong relationship.

You see, Ruth and Robert don’t only like to dress as if they lived in the ’30s, but they also avoid the technological distractions that the 21st century has brought along.
These young guys only use the phone for emergencies, while they are not Netflix fans.

“For us, this lifestyle works best and is beneficial for our relationships. It works for us as we are present in the moment as opposed to glued to Netflix or on our phones,” they explained during an interview with Daily Mail.
Ruth, a research historian, loves going around town riding her bicycle, although, as she admits, people often stare at them or even ask to take pictures with them.
This lifestyle is definitely not ideal for introverts or shy people.
“This style isn’t something you could wear if you are shy as we do get stared at a lot. We don’t mind at all and it’s often positive feedback,” they said.
As for the elderly who see them on the street, they look at them as if they were a flashback of their lives when they were at a young age. And they totally love it.

And if you’re curious about how the young couple goes about their daily life, they give us an idea.
While Ruth does her freelance projects, Robert is a whiskey seller. In their free time, they spend quality time cooking together, going for walks, or even dancing to vintage music.
“‘In our spare time, we read, talk or Robert cooks and I help. We have a few original cookbooks which are interesting from a historical point of view,” Ruth explained.
They are really glad that they don’t spend their days in front of a screen, and they are sure that this helps them live a happier life.

Neither of them even owns a TV. As Ruth says, she doesn’t mind if she goes somewhere and they have the TV on, but she doesn’t feel that having one at home would be useful. Apparently, this is something Robert agrees to.
The couple even owns a vintage car, which makes them look even more as if they are time travelers.
