Heroes don't always have superpowers. Sometimes, they are just regular people taking the same flight as you.

Women can come from all shapes and sizes, but this is not something that defines them.

While there are people who are aware that a woman is always more than meets the eye, there are still folks who don’t know about this. They occasionally victimized women around them through harsh words and disrespectful behavior.

This is exactly what happened to Savannah Phillips, a mom from Chicago. The “nightmare” she encountered took place during her flight back to Chicago from Oklahoma City.

Although Savannah was not too big, she knew she wasn’t exactly petite.

She is aware of unkind passengers who may body shame her anytime so she makes sure to choose a seat away from other passengers whenever she travels. Savannah mentioned in a Facebook post that it was because of her fear of being judged.

“I’m not the biggest person on the airplane, but I’m not the smallest. My worst nightmare is someone being uncomfortable because they have to sit next to me.”

However, she did not find the opportunity to decide for her seat on this particular flight. She ended up being seated next to a guy who appears to be in her 60’s, wearing yellow sunglasses and had a smile on his face.

The man offered to give Savannah the window seat which somehow made Savannah feel at ease, thinking that she found a good seatmate despite not being able to choose her seat. The man smiled at her and even told her that he was a comedian.

Everything seemed to be well and the man looked like he did not mind sitting next to Savannah, but everything took a sad turn of events when Savannah saw him type a text message.

The man’s message to whoever he was texting was hard to miss. His font size was way too big and his screen was so bright that Savannah caught a clear glimpse of what he was typing. Savannah shared on her post:

“The flight attendant started the safety speech and he got his phone out (with huge font and the screen brightness turned all the way up). His phone was maybe 12 inches from my face and he proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to ‘a smelly fatty.'”

The mom from Chicago was stunned and was deeply hurt by what she saw. It was painful to continue reading it.

“I don’t even know what the rest of his text said. I turned my head away as fast as I could. I was shocked and it was like confirmation of the negative things I think about myself on a daily basis. Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face. I sat and cried silently, hoping this guy didn’t try to make small talk, because I didn’t trust how I would react and I didn’t want to get kicked off the plane. I was so hurt.”

The woman silently cried, looking out of the window as she tried to calm herself down, What she did not know was that someone else saw the elderly man’s mean text. It was Chase Irwin from Nashville, the man seated behind them.

The kind passenger did not waste any moment and took footage of the guy and Savannah, with the latter clearly looking upset because of what she saw. Chase, later on, posted his video on social media and captioned:

“This guy just text his wife that he is sitting next to a smelly fatty and is going to vomit. I watched her read his text and is now looking sad.”

Chase said he “felt sick to his stomach” after seeing what the man did to Savannah and decided to do the right thing. He got up and called the man’s attention.

“Hey, I need to talk to you,” Chase said, after tapping at the man’s shoulder. The guy removed his earphones and heard Chase say with a hard tone on his voice: “We are switching seats. Now.”

Savannah shared with Inside Edition that the man was confused at first, so Chase let him know about what he did.

“You are texting about her, and I’m not putting up with that.”

Chase sat next to Savannah and offered some words of kindness and encouragement. He really was a hero that day.

Savannah shared in her post about how thankful she was for Chase’s kind gesture.

“He encouraged me not to let that guy get to me and that everything was going to be fine. We talked about Ross and the kids, his two-year-old son, our jobs, amongst other things.”

She was glad to have met the kind passenger and knew instantly that he and her husband would be good friends.

“I told him thank you for what he did and that it meant the world to me- and that he would be my husband’s new favorite person. The flight attendant kept trying to give him free drinks and told him that he was her hero. He wasn’t her hero – he was mine.”

Savannah’s post went viral and has touched many hearts online.

The story of the hero who saved Savannah’s day was something that truly inspired a lot. This world may have mean guys like that unkind passenger, but there will always be people like Chase who knows the right thing to do and acts on them.
