It’s the season of giving, and it makes it extra special when it will come as a surprise. It’s always heartwarming to see the recipient’s reaction and how it sometimes brings them to tears.

One of the best surprises is when we give back to those who gave a lot.

Some people walk the extra mile to help others or spend their spare time helping the community. We’d all agree that their selflessness deserves a bit of reward.

East Idaho News has one program that gives back to deserving individuals.

In their Secret Santa segment, their news team chooses someone in the community who they know deserves a little surprise present that could help them in their current state.

Secret Santa may be the segment’s name, but he is real.

According to the news agency, Secret Santa is a generous individual in their community who gives out almost a million dollars to deserving citizens. This Secret Santa gave East Idaho News the freedom to give and distribute this amount to.

One of Secret Santa’s recipients is Bonnie Warne of South Fremont High School.

Bonnie has been teaching for more than 30 years (she said she couldn’t keep count, so it must be that long!) who is very dedicated to her job. She’s often the first one in and the last one out of school.

Bonnie was also responsible for writing multiple grants to help their students.

Aside from the grants, she also collects clothes to help some of their students who might need them. She’s also been a volunteer at Four Paws Pet Adoptions in Rexburg for the past eight years.

But despite all the good things she did, Bonnie had her struggles, too.

For so many years, she’s been driving her old car, which was now about to give up on her. The engine has stalled more, and Bonnie admitted she needed to replace it. She just hadn’t found one she could afford.

This is why it was easy for East Idaho News to choose Bonnie.

They visited her in South Fremont High School one day, where they had a school assembly in the school gym. Nate Eaton, the News Director and Secret Santa host, went in and looked for Bonnie.

After asking her about all the fantastic things she did, it was time for her much-deserved surprise.

First, Nate handed a box with a check for $1,000. You know Bonnie’s really selfless since the first thing she thought was what they would need in school. Nate jokingly reminded her that it was for her and not the school.

Then, the bigger surprise – Nate handed her the keys to her brand-new car!

Everyone was so excited to witness this lovely surprise. The students and faculty headed outside to see an SUV with a red ribbon. She gave it a honk, and all the students cheered.

The surprise was made more special with her students to witness their teacher get something she truly deserved.
