“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you” – B. B. King
We spend so many years going to school that sometimes, it becomes tiring and unappealing. It’s understandable.
That is why our parents, other family members, and our teachers try their best to motivate us and let us see how important education is.
Education is an investment. From the time we can speak to adulthood, we never stop learning. The dedication, time, and of course, the money that we put into our education will give us a good life.
Unfortunately, not all children value their chance to go to school.
That is why we admire all the children who would do their best just to be able to go to college. Life is hard, but these kids do their best to learn and to graduate.
Some kids apply for part-time jobs just to go to college; others are blessed with educational scholarships.
Joshua Nelson, 18, is one of St. Charles West High School’s pride.
According to the school counselor, Yolanda Curry, Joshua has a heart for people. So, they won’t be surprised if he succeeds in his chosen field.
“I plan to go to Southeast Missouri State and go into their pre-optometry program. I’ll be majoring in bio-medical sciences,” Nelson said to KSDK News.
To have a dream enables anyone to persevere and do their best to achieve their goals in life.
What he didn’t disclose was the fact that Southeast Missouri State University offered him a scholarship!
For all those who are wondering why he got his scholarship, Nelson is a top student that excels in every subject; he is also a three-year basketball varsity player and the current president of the school’s Multi-Cultural Achievement Committee.
This young man is a very busy student, and his high school aims to help all the students who want to grow academically.
“The mission of it is to encourage students of color to maximize their potential and to become college and career ready,” Curry shared in her interview.
They help the students by teaching them resume writing, learning strategies for their college admission tests, and cultivating their interviewing skills.
As a responsible teen, Nelson had saved $1,000 for college, so he was in awe when the news arrived.
This young man now has extra money! Most teens his age would spend the money to buy something that they really want.
Perhaps a new gaming console? A new phone?
But Nelson was different. What he decided to do with the money shocked everyone.
Joshua Nelson shared that he has decided to use his savings to help another student.
“I was really just blown away because I was not expecting that,” Curry happily shared.
“I think he’s an inspiration to some of the other people at the school especially students of color,” Nelson’s classmate, Harmony Hudson, said. “I don’t even think he realizes that he’s doing that much for everyone else as well.”
We agree. What this young man has chosen to do will change someone’s life for the better.
“I just think it’s unbelievable what he’s doing and it’s really exciting,” 11th grader Lea Mitchell said in the interview.
There would be someone who will have the opportunity to study because of Nelson’s kind heart.
Nelson just proved that he doesn’t only excel in academics but also in humanity.
“I really thought it was important to give back to my community that poured in so much to me,” Nelson told KSDK.
We hope that with Nelson’s actions, more people will follow.
Many students are trying to make ends meet. These kids want to go to school and finish college, but life is hard.
So, with the help of kind-hearted people like Nelson, we do hope that more and more kids will have a better opportunity.
“Honestly, it makes me feel on top of the world. The fact that I can just help somebody a little bit makes me feel great and I really want to see other people succeed,” Nelson ends his interview.
