Holly Grimet had placed an order for the cake online and said she would pay in-store. When she arrived, it had already been paid for.
Grimet’s daughter, Eva, was going to celebrate her eighth birthday.
The mother had ordered a beautiful cake from the bakery section of her local Kroger.
Then she arrived to pick the cake up. The employee behind the counter told her that there was no need to pay, as it had already been paid for.
Naturally, Grimet was confused. Who, apart from her, knew about the cake?
“She goes, ‘Erm, somebody actually came in and paid for it already.’ And I said, ‘Wait, somebody that I know, or was it like their grandma or something?'” – Holly Grimet talking to KPRC 2.
Then things got even weirder. The employee handed over a piece of paper and said that it would explain everything.
More confused than ever, Grimet looked at the paper. Someone had written down a note. She started reading, and it all made sense.
The note opened by saying that whoever had paid for the cake had had a son.
He would have celebrated his eighth birthday himself that day. Unfortunately, he had passed away.
The note writer also explained that she had bought the cake to honor her son’s memory by doing good deeds.
Lastly, the note told Grimet to appreciate her daughter as much as possible.
Grimet asked the employee if the person who had bought the cake and written the note had given any personal details.
She really wanted to reach out to this person.
The employee said that the person had not revealed their identity.
Instead, the employee described the purchaser as a beautiful woman and clarified that they had never seen the person before.
Grimet took the cake and threw a big birthday party for her daughter.
Eva had a wonderful eighth birthday. He mother followed the note’s advice. She made sure to remember how much fun her children were having and realized just how lucky she was to have happy, healthy kids.
“I don’t think of losing either one of my babies ever. I can’t imagine life without them. And I can’t imagine how that mother must feel.” – Holly Grimet talking to KPRC 2.
Grimet realized that while she couldn’t thank the mother for buying the cake, she could perform a similar act of kindness.
She went back to Kroger the next day and purchased a birthday cake for someone else who she didn’t know. It was the least that she could do, after all!
Funnily enough, Grimet had been reluctant to throw Eva a birthday party.
It was a lot of work! But that note made her realize that her daughter was right for insisting that they celebrate the occasion.
And it’s lucky that she did throw that party for another reason.
Eva’s eighth birthday was on February 22nd, 2020. With the benefit of hindsight, we all know that that would have been the last big celebration that Eva and her friends could have had before everything shut down.
As we come out of the pandemic, we should all take this story to heart.
It’s so important to celebrate the small moments in life, because you never know what could happen in the future!
