Dogs are man’s best friend. It’s one of those cliches that very much holds true. But this cliche is also true the other way — sometimes, a man is a dog’s best buddy and protector.

That’s the case with the sweet story of a soldier and the puppy who he loves.

Every year, men and women selflessly join one of the several military branches.

Often, that involves being stationed in a not-so-pleasant part of the world. That’s what happened to Army Spc. Tyler Mosley, who served with the 7th Special Forces Group in Syria.

Mosley’s story began in January while stationed in the northern part of Syria. One particular night was bitterly cold. Just walking around the compound, he saw puddles of water completely frozen over.

While there, Mosley had rescued a sweet puppy named Daisy from a mission.

On this cold night, the blanket Daisy had around her had become soaking wet. He gently removed it and then spent time making sure she was warm and comfortable.

Mosley was extra concerned about this small pup.

Her mother, a German Shepherd, was found lifeless, and next to her one of Daisy’s siblings was also deceased. But thanks to an explosive ordinance disposal technician, he found the one puppy still alive.

As Mosley explained, Daisy was “so short, fat, and plumpy.” Beyond that, he was amazed at just how loving she was. When he first met her at the shelter, she immediately came to him and started licking.

They both fell in love at first sight.

Even though Mosley was super protective of this puppy, there wasn’t anything he could do when he was sent home. Sadly, he had to leave Daisy behind in Syria. It was a heartbreaking moment for the two of them.

There was no way this soldier was going to stay separated from his beloved pet forever.

So, he reached out to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International asking for help. Without hesitation, they went to work to bring the pup to the United States.

While it took a lot of work and some time, Mosley finally received the news he was hoping to hear. Daisy was coming home.

“She was in a bad place … I just wanted her to be here so I could give her the love, the life that she wouldn’t have there.”

Beaming with excitement, the day that Mosley and Daisy would be reunited had arrived. As imagined, he was nervous. Would she remember him?

At the airport, Mosley patiently waited to see Daisy. Then, he saw her. With her tail wagging and ready to give him more kisses, the two embraced.

Mosley couldn’t stop smiling while tears rolled down his face. To some people, this puppy was nothing more than a dog. But to him, she was what kept him going. She was the light in his life while serving in a very dark place.

Today, this puppy is living life to the fullest with Mosley right by her side.
