Restaurant owner offers thief a job instead of turning him in to the police
The thief did more damage with the cost to repair the door than what he found in the register.

Burglars have different reasons for doing their crimes and a study recently tried to break down what those reasons may be. The researchers found out that 51% of the study’s participants commit burglaries to acquire drugs. About 37% do it for money.

An unknown man broke into a restaurant in Augusta, Georgia.

The co-founder of the restaurant, Carl Wallace, shared in an interview with WWNY-TV:

“The suspect threw a brick through the glass [door].”

Like most victims of burglaries, Carl initially felt frustrated and angry.

Apart from shouldering the cost of repairing the door, he would also need to explain what happened to their customers.

He said:

“I realized that we’re gonna have to kind of put up a Facebook post about our door looking really, really bad because here we are going to put up two sheets of plywood over the front door to just get through the day.”

The incident was caught in the restaurant’s security camera.

After breaking the glass door, the suspect went straight to the cash register. That’s when the alarm blared.

Fortunately, there wasn’t anything in the drawer.

Carl further shared:

“He did more damage to the cost to replace the door than he ever would have gotten out of the register.”

After sorting out the mess, the restaurant owner started writing a post on Facebook to explain the door’s condition to their customers.

He wanted to make sure that the people knew what happened and why the door looked like a mess. However, in the middle of crafting his post, something happened.

Carl had a realization.

He decided to edit his post and call out the man who broke into his restaurant. Instead of expressing his wrath and frustration, he came up with a surprising offer.

He offered the man a job application.

In the post, Carl said:

“To the would be robber who is clearly struggling with life decisions or having money issues… please swing by for a job application. There are better opportunities out there than this path you’ve chosen.”

Carl promised to help the man.

He also vowed that no police would be involved. He wouldn’t even ask the man about what happened. Carl is simply determined to help the person and mentor him to be better in life.

In a different interview with Today, he shared:

“It really kind of occurred to me (that it’s) … Easter weekend and to just extend an olive branch. You know, extend the layer of forgiveness and kindness and give the … would-be robber some redemption and a different path.”

He wants to fix today’s “broken system”.

Carl is encouraging people to help stop the system and fix it. He wants to do something different so he’s giving the man an opportunity.

The restaurant’s post reached a lot of people.

Most of them were amazed by what Carl did. They praised his actions and promised to support his business.

One Facebook user said:

“This is absolutely amazing! I commend Carl for having the right heart posture and having the courage to offer help, guidance or/and a job; even after a theft. Continue on “BEING” the example, the world need more of this.”

Another one commented:

“I came here just to tell you thank you for being the change. This is exactly how we change the world for the better. Sometimes I feel like humanity is lost then someone like you comes along and reminds me not to give up on us.”

What Carl did is inspiring. Not everyone has the heart to do the same thing he did.
