One hot May day, two police officers in Arlington, Texas, got a call about a shoplifter at a TJ Maxx. The officers, Adkins and Hillard, went and dealt with the call, and then they headed out to their cars.

As they walked through the parking lot, a woman called for them to help her.

The woman told the officers that there were two tiny kittens under her car.

The officers knelt down and saw two little faces staring up at them.

“They located the kittens inside the bumper where most likely the mother cat had placed them for some reason,” Jesse Minton, of the Arlington Police Department, told The Dodo.

The kittens started meowing loudly as they saw the police officers staring at them. They seemed to realize the officers were there to help them.

Officer Adkins reached under the car and scooped the kittens up. Then, he brought the kittens back to his car.

“The owner of the car advised she did not own a cat and had no idea how the kittens got in there,” Minton said.

When they got to the car, the kittens wouldn’t stop cuddling with Adkins.

The kittens clung onto Adkins, refusing to let go. They had already bonded with their rescuer!

Adkins brought the kittens over to the vet to get checked out.

The kittens were very hungry, but other than that they were in good health. The vet said they were under six weeks old.

Adkins fed the kittens formula with a bottle, and his heart melted as he looked down at the little cats. He quickly decided to make them part of his family!

Adkins brought the kittens home with him that day. He already has a good idea for names for them!

“He thinks he may name them ‘TJ’ and ‘Max,’” Minton said.

The Arlington Police Department posted about their adorable rescue on Facebook. They also got in a good dig at the fire department!

‪”Who says Firefighters are the only ones who rescue kittens? (Yes…. we didn’t need a ladder on this call….) While being dispatched to an unrelated call at TJ Maxx, the manager informed Officers Adkins and Hilliard about two kittens stuck underneath the back of a car in the parking lot. Both kittens rescued and will be going to a great home!”

The post quickly got over a thousand shares and likes—everyone loved seeing the photos of Adkins with his two little kittens.

The kitten rescue wasn’t Officer Adkin’s only big accomplishment. He also won the South District Officer of the Year Award, and he got to give a speech while his family watched.

He also got to take home a beautiful trophy. We’re sure Max and TJ will have a good time trying to knock the trophy off its shelf!

We’re sure Officer Adkins wasn’t expecting to bring home two kittens that fateful day, but the cats decided he was their new dad. And who can argue with that?

We’re so glad these cats went to such a good fur-ever home. Check out another adorable video of about a police officer adopting a kitten they found below!
