Surprises aren’t everyone’s favorite thing, but if there is one surprise that everyone loves, it’s seeing a loved one when you weren’t expecting it! For military families, reunions are often full of so much joy, especially when it’s been a really long time since they were last together. For one woman who always “hated” surprises, this is probably one she’s willing to tolerate!
TSgt. Ricardo Guzman is in the U.S. Air force and decided to do something special for his wife and kids.
Little did TSgt. Guzman know that his little surprise was about to blow up all over the internet! It all started when he decided he wanted to do his return home a little differently than he normally did. The first thing he did was text his wife’s best friend:
“I want to do something different for this deployment. I think I want to surpise her [his wife]” – USA Today
It had been over six months since he had last seen his family and it was time to come home.
The last six months had been a tough one for TSgt. Guzman and he was ready to see his family. Being overseas and away from home for that long starts to wear on you! With a wife and four daughters at home (who always sent him adorable videos), homesickness didn’t even begin to describe it. Since this was his longest deployment ever, he wanted to make it special.
The tricky part with the surprise, however, was his wife. She is an incredible sleuth and always seemed to figure things out!
All the pieces finally started coming together when Mandy’s (Guzman’s wife) friends started to help. Mandy was a professed “hater of surprises”, mostly because she always seemed to find out ahead of time! During this go-round, however, a lot of extra care was being taken to make sure she didn’t know until the perfect time.
One of Mandy’s friends told her that there was something in her trunk that she needed help with.
Everything seemed totally normal… at least to Mandy! Her friends had hidden Guzman in the trunk of the car and he was patiently waiting for her to open the door. As she walked up and pulled the trunk open, he jumped out in full dress with a bottle of champagne in his hand.
From the way she responded, the surprise was clearly a success – she had no idea!
Still, the surprise wasn’t over. After a long embrace, the next part was to surprise the girls who were in the house. Heading inside, Mandy told them that there was a surprise waiting for them. At that moment, Sgt. Guzman stepped out from behind a cardboard cutout and spread his arms!
In moments all the girls were crying and in his arms.
With everyone crying, there was one thing for certain: a father was finally home with his family. Thankfully, he isn’t supposed to be deployed long-term any time soon. This may prove that some surprises are worth the effort!
