A promise from a dad to his daughter isn’t easily broken. The love that a dad has for his daughter is truly beautiful, even if it can be haunting. For one man, a promise would turn into a lifelong mission.
Jim Mcaskill is a man that is clearly determined.
Jim, a 51-year-old man, has been searching for his child for over three decades. In the late 1970s, Jim learned that his girlfriend was pregnant. Being only 15 at the time, things weren’t totally under his control with how things ended up playing out.
Despite wanting otherwise, Jim’s girlfriend decided to give up her child for adoption.
Jim knew he wanted to keep the baby, a daughter, but the decision had been made without her. His only interaction, albeit against the rules, was a 10-minute “hello” that the hospital allowed. That hello would also be his goodbye.
The girl, Devon, was then taken and given to a family looking to adopt.
During Jim’s quick meet, he was able to take a little necklace, promising to give it to her one day. Every birthday since, Jim wrote letters to his missing daughter and hoped to give them to her in person one day.
Since his name was omitted from Devon’s birth records, his search for her over the years was nearly impossible.
Using national locaters and registries, he still came up short – that was until he found someone on Facebook. His daughter’s new name, Nicole, was now known. He had finally found her and knew it from the pictures. “She was a spitting image of her mother.”
34 years later and the two decided to meet.
From whispering a promise to a newborn to finally following through, it was finally time. They met in a hotel and when Jim saw his daughter for the first time, he completely lost it. He had a bouquet of flowers with him and he was clearly emotional.
They hugged and they had an instant connection.
After Jim stopped crying, he told her that he always loved her and had never stopped. That moment was the start of a relationship that the two knew was special.
Since that day, they have been sharing their pasts with each other to make up for lost time.

The necklace that Jim “stole” was finally returned.
Devon never loses sight of the necklace and wears it around her wrist as a reminder of how much her dad loves her. Jim is truly doing all he can to make sure that his little girl knows he doesn’t just love her now, he’s loved her for her entire life. From what we can see, Devon is clearly happy to have a dad like that in her life – even if he is a little late!
