At the center of every boy’s heart is a little piece that will always belong to his mother!
For all the mama’s boys out there (and for all the moms who absolutely adore their boys), this story is an example of a man who went to some crazy lengths just to talk to his biological mom for the first time. Technology isn’t always a good thing, but stories like this are a wonderful reminder that they can be tools to bring us together.
Jason Spurza had a Mother’s Day that he will never forget.
Jason has known that he was adopted for his entire life. It was only a few years ago, however, that he decided he wanted to learn who his biological mother was. Starting the search, he got his two best friends together (with his adopted parents’ total blessing) and began.
Jason told TODAY: “I wanted to learn where I came from.”
They didn’t have much information to start with which made it difficult.
The only information that they had was a name listed in some newspaper articles from a few decades ago. Nevertheless, they began looking in Orange County, Virginia. The newspaper article told the story of how Jason was found: placed in a banana box and left at a nursing home. The man who found him was the only name they had.
Fed up when the leads didn’t go anywhere, they decided to use some new technology – DNA testing!
Using a DNA test, they enlisted the help of a genetic genealogist. Soon, she had some new information. It took her only a few weeks to discover some breaking information that could help Jason find his long-lost biological mother.
With sketched out family trees on printer paper, they finally had a potential match.
Jason sent a Facebook message to his potential mom that said:
“Hi Danby, I was born April 16th, 1987. I’m adopted and took a DNA test, which has led me to you.”
The woman’s response came almost instantly. It was a match!
In an interview with TODAY, Danby, now officially recognized as Jason’s birth mother, explained what had happened all those years ago.
She was 16-years-old and had gotten pregnant and nobody knew. She went through the entire pregnancy alone, even giving birth at home in her own bathtub. After cleaning Jason up she nursed him, but then realized raising a baby wasn’t an option. Jason needed a better life. That’s when she took him to the nursing home.
Now, three decades later, the two are sharing their first Mother’s Day together.
In one of the most incredible circles, they have finally come round and become family. For Jason, it is an amazing treat. It’s like “having two moms that love you”, as Jason explained. Many people go their entire lives without a group of people that love them. Now Jason doesn’t have to worry about that ever again – he has two!
