Have you ever successfully solved a Rubik’s cube? Do you know anyone who has done it?

Dustin Dean is a mentalist who continues to boggle people’s minds with mind-reading and intuition.

And he has been performing magic since he was a young boy.

“I used to do these dumb little tricks for [my mom] and I’d set up a little stage area,” Dustin shared. “She would freak out like it was the greatest thing she’d ever seen and that gave me an appreciation for, a confidence for it.”

But when he was 16 years old, he was diagnosed with a condition called Essential Tremor.

Essential Tremor is a medical condition that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. Since it occurs mostly with the hands, it makes simple tasks quite difficult to do. Simple tasks include drinking from a glass or tying shoelaces.

This meant his usual magic tricks would no longer work for him.

If this happened to other people, they would have given up magic and done something else. Not for Dustin. He loved magic and he just needed to be creative.

He created a new magic trick called “sleight of mind” which was a combination of intuition, psychology, and magic.

“I kind of have to create the illusion that I can read minds by using different techniques,” Dustin explained. “I believe in intuition, I believe it’s something that everyone has and that’s what I mainly use.”

And that’s what he demonstrates whenever he goes out into the streets of Syracuse and challenges people to use their intuition when it comes to magic.

He correctly predicted the outcome of the 2018 Superbowl. He challenged a local tattoo artist to use his intuition to ink whatever comes to mind. The design matched the design that Dustin had thought of a month ago that was sealed in an envelope.

And then there was the homeless violinist.

She was playing her violin as a street busker. Dustin saw her and decided to challenge her. He handed her a Rubik’s cube and asked if she’d ever solved it.

She said she’s never done it before.

Dustin agreed with her, saying there are 47 trillion possible combinations in a single Rubik’s cube. But there’s only one combination if you want to solve it.

And, of course, Dustin loved challenges so he challenged her.

“If you solve this, behind your back, in under 30 seconds,” Dustin started. “I’m going to give you $100.”

The girl’s jaw dropped but she accepted the challenge.

So Dustin went behind her and asked her to put her hands behind her back. He gave her the Rubik’s cube and gave her final instructions.

“All I want you to do is turn that randomly. Turn it as long as you want, whichever way you want. It doesn’t matter. It’s completely up to you,” Dustin explained. “But whenever it feels right to you, that’s when I want you to stop.”

He asked her if it’s possible that when she stopped and saw it, the Rubik’s cube would be solved. She said that would be impossible.

“When I count to three, you’re gonna hold it above your head without looking at it,” Dustin told her.

He counts to three and she holds up the Rubik’s cube over her head. And she discovers that she did it, she solved the Rubik’s cube!

She was so shocked and speechless. She had no idea how it happened.

“I don’t understand though, this is wacky,” the girl reacted.

And, as promised, Dustin gave her $100.
