Today, most everyone’s heard of a flash mob. But in 2003 when the first group performed, no one had any idea what was happening. Bill Wasik, who worked as the senior editor for Harper’s Magazine, organized the first flash mob without realizing the event would become a worldwide phenomenon.

Popular throughout Europe

Although flash mobs do appear in the United States, they’re seen more often in European countries. These consist of people who go to train stations, shopping malls, airports, and other locations typically crowded with shoppers and travelers to perform. But they do it in such a way that it takes some time to figure out what’s going on.

On a mission

In 2019, a flash mob choir burst into song. On this particular day, the group hoped to achieve two goals. First, they wanted to give people something to smile about, and second, to raise awareness for children living on the streets and around train stations in the United Kingdom, East Africa, and India.

An inspiring plan

This particular flash mob was the brainchild of Southeastern. With tremendous support from the entire rail industry, everyone was determined to make it a big success.

And with it being the Christmas holiday, what better way to make people feel good while working to save innocent children.

Incredible talent

Flash mobs consist of some amazingly talented people. And that was the case here. But this choir was unique … for one thing, James Hawkins, a famous choirmaster trained them, and for another thing, the group was comprised of rail employees and London Station staff members.

The perfect song

To have a flash mob, you need music. And considering this choir’s mission, they chose something perfect. On this day, they’d be performing to the iconic song, “Lean on Me.”

All at once

Something else that made this flash mob different from others had to do with the execution. Usually, you’ll see one person step forward who begins to either sing or dance, and then, one by one, other people join them.

But for this choir, everyone came forward at the same time while singing the lyrics to this beautiful song.

It was magical

From every corner inside London Station, people kept walking forward and singing. It didn’t take long for a huge group to congregate. Thanks to the training they received, their voices were heavenly.

Well-deserved attention

While performing “Lean on Me,” everyone in the flash mob was wearing their work clothes. People milling about the station saw ticket agents, police officers, baggage specialists, and many others working toward a common goal. It was truly beautiful.

Something in the air

As the choir continued to sing, something unexpected began to happen. It was as though the air inside the station filled with love. Many people in the flash mob closed their eyes, raised their hands, hugs, cried, and slowly swayed to the music.

Such an amazing experience

Not only were the members of the flash mob touched but also strangers passing through London Station. Every individual involved in putting this event together had a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
