At one time or another, every kid will try their hand at something creative—whether it’s painting, writing or making music videos with their friends.

Whatever it might be, giving them space to explore their interests can do wonders.

The boy in this music video is now known as Jack Harlow.

What is interesting about Jack is that he’s had a master plan for himself since he was a kid.

In a video from the YouTube channel, Before They Were Famous, Jack’s past is explored. This video shines a light on how he got to where he is today.

Jack Harlow is an excellent example of what can happen when kids are allowed to experiment with different interests. From a very young age, Jack was drawn to rap music. He even used it in response to school bullies.

At ten years old, he asked his mom if he could listen to explicit rap records in her collection.

We know what you might be thinking: no ten-year-old should be listening to explicit rap! But the truth is, without that experience, he might now be where he is today.

Giving kids access to the tools they need to explore is essential.

It shows that they are being supported and trusted. And let’s be honest, even if told no, kids will find a way to hear that music or buy a camera or paints.

Why not give them the support, monitor their usage, and explain what explicit means and power comes with those words?

His mom constantly showed him her support.

When he asked his mom how he could become the best rapper in the world, she told him by practicing for 10,000 hours. Jack took that literally and got to work, and it paid off! By his freshman year of high school, he was already meeting with Def Jam and Atlantic Records. However, he didn’t make a deal at that time.

Because he had the freedom and trust to explore his passion for rap, he had a plan for himself and was always calculated in his creative journey.

Depending on what they want to do, kids might just need permission and support, which can go a very long way.

Even Jack’s teachers were supportive and allowed him to bring rap into the classroom. You might be worried that your kid will change their mind and want to do something different. And that’s okay! That’s part of the freedom of being a kid.

You get to try out a whole bunch of stuff until you find something you really love!

You don’t have to go out and buy your kid the most expensive equipment or supplies either.

Jack used a Guitar Hero microphone and a laptop to make music with his friend. It doesn’t take much to get started! When Jack had trouble with what to write about he decided to just be honest about what he was going through.

Creativity gives kids a place to express how they are feeling when they don’t have the words.

Kids will make mistakes, try things and fail, but that can be more important than succeeding.

It shows them that it’s okay and gives them a chance to figure it out for themselves.

Over time, Jack removed many of his old videos and posts from the internet so they wouldn’t diminish his credibility.

Even so, we’re glad some of these videos are being unearthed. They show how dedicated he was and what kids can accomplish if they do the same!
