Homelessness is not rare in the country.
For a first-world country, the United States has a high homelessness rate. There are 17 out of every 10,000 people in the U.S. who are experiencing homelessness.
Thatâs 567,715 people as of 2019.
These numbers were expected to rise significantly during the pandemic when people were left with no jobs and kicked out of their homes.
Homelessness remains a problem in most states despite the governmentâs efforts to provide these people a safe place to sleep and live. No one could imagine how difficult it is to live off the street day by day.
This is what Matthew Bandeira tried to discover for a day.
Matt is a YouTuber who creates feel-good, emotional, and thought-provoking content. And in this video, he effectively does that as he follows a homeless man and sees how he lives his day. He saw the man sitting on the bench begging for money.
At one point, one man passed by and told him to âget a job.â
Itâs very easy to comment something like this when you donât know why the poor man went homeless and if youâre living in privilege. Still, Matt observed how the homeless guy and the people around reacted.
At this point, the man is probably hungry already.
Matt saw him rummaging through a trash bin to look for leftover food. He canât seem to open it, so he walked around. He chanced upon a bowl of food left at the bottom of the staircase but saw that it wasnât good to eat. He went back to the bench.
Matt made his move and handed him $50.
He continued to follow the old man to see what he would do with the money he gave him. He went to a corner store to buy some food. He walked to the park where he saw his friend. But what he did after will surprise you.
He gave all the food he bought plus the money Matt gave him to his friend.
Yes, all of it.
His friend, who was also homeless, was so grateful for the gesture. They shared a short conversation before he went on his way. Matt couldnât help but run after the homeless man and ask why he did what he did!
His answer will move you.
âSometimes, other people need more than I do. It makes me happy to make other people happy.â
And this manâs story will touch you even more.
He said he suffered from a âdeep dark depressionâ and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and manic depression. His wife was scared of him, so she left him and took their two kids.
Everything was gone in a snap.
Since then, heâs been living off the street. Probably, not knowing what to do anymore. While itâs easy for people to tell him to get a job, with a mental illness and with no idea how to get help, it may be a vicious cycle heâs afraid he canât end.
The man deeply moved the people in the comments section.
Most of them agreed that those with less are the ones who give more.
More than praising Matt for giving money to the old man, they praised the homeless guy more because of his unselfishness.
Kudos to them both for showing that kindness always wins.
