As we’ve heard, it’s not the things that we do when people are watching that tell who we are, but the things we do when nobody is watching that make someone’s character. This is undoubtedly true, but in a world full of cameras and cell phones, we have the wonderful opportunity to see people acting their best when they don’t think anyone is watching.
It’s a beautiful thing to see people treating others with kindness, especially when there isn’t the prospect of a reward.
For one boy in Tuscon, Arizona, that moment was caught on camera and goes to show just how kind-hearted he really is. Dashawn Butler is a 13-year-old boy from Tuscon who recently went viral on Facebook for his kind actions.
Dashawn was at the Park Place Mall when he saw something that demanded his attention.
“She thought that she wouldn’t make it to her car,” Butler told KOLD.
The boy noticed that there was an elderly woman trying to cross the street where her car was parked. Due to her age, she was having some trouble making it across the parking lot and was clearly a bit overwhelmed. Instead of just moving on, even with a feeling of pity, Dashawn decided to act.
Dashawns mother, Maria Lopez, saw the whole thing.
Dashawn was walking out of the mall with a bag in his hand from shopping. When he saw the woman, he dropped everything he had and rushed to help her. His mom couldn’t have been more proud.
“[It] kind of blew me away,” Lopez told KOLD. “Not that I didn’t expect anything like that from him, because he’s pretty much a good kid and he does a lot of things for people. I don’t really think I expected that though.”
Even more, Maria was able to catch the whole thing on video.
After she posted the video, it blew up on Facebook. As you can imagine, people loved watching a young man go out of his way to make an elderly individual’s day that much easier. Since it was originally posted on Facebook, it’s gotten over 6,000 comments and thousands upon thousands of likes!
In the video, we see the boy slowly walking his new friend across the street and people can’t get enough of it.
ABC13 even did a story on it! The rest of the community is also proud of him. Dashawn himself is totally shocked! He just thought he was doing his best to help someone and found his face all across the internet receiving words of affirmation for his kind deed.
This will definitely be a catalyst moment for Dashawn!
Doing something for the reward of it isn’t a great thing, ethically. For Dashawn, however, this act that he didn’t think anyone would see will surely be a cornerstone for the rest of his life. It gives a message that says even the unseen deeds are valuable.
