Being a mother is hard work. We’re constantly experiencing ‘mother’s guilt’ no matter what we do. If we stay at home with the kids, we’re worried we’re not contributing enough. If we work a job or a career, we’re concerned we’re not spending enough time at home. For most of us, there really is no winning.
As Mother’s Day was approaching, Tina Stoilova of Sydney, Australia, had really been missing her kids.
The mother of four worked long hours at the local supermarket; sometimes she even put in overnight shifts. The hours were long and grueling, but she managed to make it work.
Tina’s long work hours meant she didn’t get to spend as much time with her children as she would like.
In addition to this exhausting schedule, Tina’s oldest daughter Donna had recently moved to the States.
The two were very close, and Tina found it hard to cope with her absence. Although they tried to keep up with calls and e-mails, it just wasn’t the same. Luckily, Donna had something up her sleeve.
Tina’s daughter had teamed up with Kyle Sandilands and Jackie “O” Henderson, radio hosts on Sydney’s Kiis FM station, to set up a very special Mother’s Day surprise.
Kyle and Jacki O often present “surprise give-back” segments, where they help listeners and fans set up surprises— and now, Donna had been selected.
Unbeknownst to Tina, the radio station was going to cover the cost of Donna’s flight back home to visit her mother for Mother’s Day.
Kyle and Jackie O had cameras set up all around Tina’s workplace to capture Tina’s reaction first-hand. As they go live, Jackie tells listeners:
“[Tina] doesn’t know that her daughter Donna is in one of the aisles.”
The cameras in the store show Donna in one of the aisles, looking nonchalantly at boxes of cereal. In the background, you see Tina start to walk by.
At first, Tina walks right by her daughter— but then she stops and does a double-take.
When she realizes that it’s Donna, she’s so ecstatic she bursts into tears.
Tina calms down a little, and the hosts speak to her via phone to reveal their role in the surprise. Tine responds simply:
“My dream has come true.”
Tina’s Mother’s Day surprise has been viewed over 291,000 times, and it really is a great reminder of the incredible mother-daughter bond.
