Grandparents are some of the most important people in our lives. The best grandpas and grandmas are kind, considerate, thoughtful, and generous. They’ve always got cookies in the oven and stories to tell. They’re always ready to do everything and anything to make us smile.

In short, they’re some of the best people on Earth, and this Oregon grandpa is definitely a contender in the ‘Best Grandparent’ championships after doing something simply extraordinary for his little grandsons and granddaughters.

Doug Hayes is part of a very big family! He has 10 grandkids in total, and they all go to a little Catholic school in Gladstone. Since it’s such a small school, there’s not a regular bus system in place to take the kids to and from their classes each day.

This means that Doug’s grandchildren always had a big journey to deal with every morning and every evening of the school week. He felt sorry for them and wanted to do something to help, so he decided to buy his very own bus and start up a ‘Grandfather Express’ school bus system just for his grandkids!

Doug had the idea right around Christmas time, so decided to make the bus a big festive surprise for his little ones.

He always likes buying them gifts around the holidays, trying to choose things they can get a lot of use out of, and this bus is certainly a life-changing present for all ten children.

Doug and the kids’ parents arranged a special surprise reveal for the little ones, gathering them all on the porch and blowing their little minds as he drove up in the big yellow bus.

Here’s what a few of the kids said when interviewed by a TV news crew about the bus:”It was a big surprise!” “I was really stunned, I never expected him to buy a bus!” “It was really fun!”

Most kids want the Christmas holidays to last forever, but these excited little ones can’t wait to go back to school and show off the bus to their friends.

They can’t wait to see how their buddies react when they see the bus pulling up in front of the school, and Doug is hopeful that his kind gesture will inspire the kids to be kind and generous to others in future too, saying “It’s something that we’re hoping they’ll carry into their lives.”

It’s definitely a gift that these little ones won’t soon forget, and it’s so nice to see a loving grandpa making such a huge effort to put smiles on the faces of his grandchildren.

Doug definitely deserves one of those ‘Best Grandpa’ mugs, and maybe even an extra special award for being such a great guy. Check out the video below to learn more about this magical story and to get a closer look at the exterior and interior of the Grandfather Express.
