When we were little, we all had fantasies of running away and striking out on our own. Maybe it was from reading too much Huckleberry Finn or maybe it was from an argument with our parents over vegetables at dinner. Whatever the reason, our childlike minds thought we would be able to make it without only our wit and a bit of luck. Truth be told, however, most adventures ended before we even left our yards!
Now, in the age of Ring doorbells and cameras, parents get to witness kids striking out on their own.
Derek Lipp recently uploaded a video on TikTok that has gone viral. The hilarious footage shows his little boy deciding to “run away” and leave his home for good. The only tough part for the boy is his dad’s video cameras!
Within seconds of leaving, the boy is confronted by his dad who sees him on the doorbell cam.
The following conversation is nothing short of hilarious.
“Dad, I’m running away”
Declaring his status as a delinquent, Dawson tells his dad that he’s running away. It’s the same feeling that we all felt at some minor grievance when we were 10 years old.
Dawson was clearly prepared, however.
When he formulated his plan to run away, Dawson thought ahead. He didn’t bring the non-essentials like food, money, or water, he brought only what really mattered. His Minecraft sword and a skateboard for transportation.

In Dawson’s mind, having a foam sword was priority number one – we can’t blame his line of thinking. In the video, we see him walking away with his Spiderman backpack when his dad finally confronts him.
“Dawson, what are you doing?!”
Dawson’s reason became clear. His dad said he didn’t love him. Well… that’s what Dawson felt, at least. What his dad REALLY said was:
“Turn off your PlayStation, it’s time for bed.”
To a little kid, those are basically the same thing. After explaining to his dad his reason for leaving, Dawson made the big leap – he took off. Well, he left on his skateboard.
With his dad chasing after him, Dawson skated down the street.
The video ends there, but Dawson is featured in quite a few other videos on Derek’s TikTok. Our bet? Dawson turned around and went home right as his stomach let out a growl. It probably took around 5 minutes or less.
Since the video was released, it’s gone totally viral.
It currently has 6.1 million likes and over 40k comments. It’s honestly a pretty hilarious video and Dawsons sentiment is something we can all relate to. If you have tried to run away with nothing but a backpack on and visions of video-game grandeur in your mind, did you really have a childhood?
