There are two kinds of people in this world: those who appreciate the value of a hard day’s work and those who… do not. And Jaylesya Corbett, a young woman from Nash County, North Carolina, falls into the former category.
Every day, Jaylesya Corbett walks more than six miles to get to and from her job at Bojangles’ Chicken ‘n Biscuits.
She’d accidentally applied at the wrong location during her job hunt only to be offered a job. “So, I said since they gave me a chance and they hired me, I will do it,” the woman explained.
Every single day, Corbett left the house at 3 AM to make it to work on time for her 5 AM shift.
One day, along her journey, she ran into Nash County Sheriff’s Office deputy Sgt. Scott Bass. In an interview with ABC 11, he recalled:
“One morning at this intersection I saw a young female walking, and it was really, really cold.”
“I could see by her dress that she worked for Bojangles.”
Seeing the woman shiver in the cold, the officer immediately offered her a ride. “I said, ‘Yeah, I could use a ride,” she recalled. “It was raining really badly.”
Sgt. Bass made it a habit to drive Corbett whenever he saw her walking the long trek to work. Soon, however, the officer wanted to do something more.
“It just kind of really weighed on me and bothered me, and every day that I gave her a ride I just, for some reason, just talked to my wife about her.”
Hoping to make Corbett’s life a bit easier, Sgt. Bass came up with a plan. “I contacted Walmart in Nashville, and I spoke to some of the managers there,” he said.
Together, Bass and the manager of the local Walmart came up with a brilliant way to help the hardworking woman.
Turns out Bass had been eying out a special gift for Corbett which the store manager, Iris Pierce, “donated to [the] young lady’s cause,” he said. Next, all that was left was to deliver the gift.
When Corbett opened her front door, she was alarmed to see an officer outside. After assuring the woman she hadn’t done anything wrong, Bass revealed the true reason for his visit.
In response, Corbett said:
“I was shocked. I didn’t think it was real.”
Since being covered by local news stations, Bass’s actions have been going viral.
Deputy Brandon Medina, Chief of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office has said: “I was truly humbled by Sergeant Bass’s efforts when he asked if it was OK to help Jaylesya and to see the happiness and joy he brought to her by his actions.” Comments on the story read:
“There still good people in this world.”
“What an amazing gesture of service.”
“Great to see the caring of the sheriff’s department”
