Often, we’re quick to judge those living on the margins of society, painting them with broad strokes of mistrust.
Yet, the reality is far from this grim picture, as demonstrated by a heartwarming encounter at a local A&W.
Enter Kim, the cashier, whose job it is to serve with a smile.
When a man approached her counter, he was met with a warm greeting and an attentive ear.
This wasn’t just another transaction; it was the beginning of something much more meaningful.
The conversation took a turn when the man inquired about the price of the cheapest burger.
Kim, trying to gauge his preference, asked if he wanted a regular hamburger or a cheeseburger.
It was then that the man revealed his financial constraint—he only had a dollar.
Kim, empathetic and resourceful, searched for a menu item within his budget.
Despite her efforts, nothing was cheap enough. Most would have stopped there, but Kim thought outside the box, offering the man a solution that defied the usual business transaction.
She offered him a hotdog, on the house. The man, surprised and grateful, accepted.
His inquiry into why Kim was helping him out of her own pocket led to a touching revelation: she understood the gnaw of hunger, having faced tough times herself.
At this juncture, the man disclosed his identity.
He was Zachery Dereniowski, known as MDMotivator on YouTube, a figure known for capturing acts of kindness.
Touched by Kim’s generosity, he placed his lone dollar in the tip jar and handed her $1,000, leaving her overwhelmed with emotion.
Kim’s response to why she helped Dereniowski was poignant.
Having known the sting of need and the cold shoulder of indifference, she vowed to make a difference in whatever small ways she could, ensuring others didn’t feel that same neglect.
Dereniowski’s online presence, with millions of followers, is dedicated to showcasing the rich generosity of those who have little.
He uses his platform to advocate for mental health, inspiring and encouraging others to support and understand one another.
The story doesn’t end with just a viral video.
In a further act of kindness, Dereniowski set up a GoFundMe for Kim, which has raised a significant sum, proving that kindness, indeed, begets kindness, creating ripples of goodwill that extend far beyond the initial act.
