Reunions can be emotional at the best of times, but when one of the separated halves has been in military service they hit even harder. The extra risk to your loved one while they’re in service can raise the anxiety one feels with distance and make you want them to just come home. These can be especially true with parent/child relationships, with emotional reunions of moms and dads coming home to their kids.
But it can sometimes be even more emotional the other way around…
After only four months apart, one 20 year-old Airman decided to surprise her mother…
By showing up unannounced at her place of work. It was a slick operation, and one that’s sure to tug on those heart strings. It starts with our girl coming up to the back entrance of what looks like a hospital. With a cheeky “shush” gesture, we approach the rear entrance. This E-12 Airman is so young that you can imagine any mother would miss her baby. Being still in the first rank, it’s possible that this may have been her first long stint away from home.
Despite being in the military, she still has clear nerves!
Fair enough, this kind of surprise can always raise the blood pressure of those trying to pull it off. While she knows how much her mom will have missed her, and how happy seeing her again by surprise will make her, the pressure is on to make the surprise work!
When the door opens, it seems like her mother is coming out.
That is until our girl gives her a timid wave of recognition…This isn’t her mom but clearly a co-conspirator. She’s the mole on the inside who’s making this all happen. That’s how you infiltrate a facility! This military girl is putting her skills to use!
As they travel down the hall, the pressure rises still.
At the last moment, she ducks behind a corner, and the doors into the kitchen are opened. Her mom’s co-worker is wearing an apron, it seems like Mom works in the kitchen of a hospital. While she ducks around a corner, her mom’s workmate runs off to play The Dixie Chicks “Travelin’ Soldier” on in the kitchen…now that’s going to be a recipe for tears!
Our girl turns to the camera, the operator of which seems nervous too.
Anybody who’s ever planned a surprise will know how nerve-wracking these grand gestures can be.
“She’s going to freak out.”
-she tells us.
Mom is hard at work as our girl approaches.
With deft stalking ability, she sneaks into the kitchen while her mother works away diligently. Maybe sneaking up to surprise her wasn’t going to be so hard after all! Mom is so engrossed in her work that our girl could probably have simply walked right up to her.
Within a few yards, Mom is still in her own world.
Her workmates are obviously all in on the surprise, yet Mom remains oblivious to her own daughter, practically within arms reach. She may be lost in thoughts of her distant daughter while Travelin’ Soldier plays in the kitchen.
Eventually she calls out: “Momma!”
As Mom turns around, she sees her daughter and screams hysterically, yelling “My baby!’
Then, the way she jumps onto her daughter and wraps her in an embrace is enough to make an Easter Island head spring a leak. The way that she holds her grown-up baby and cries into her shoulder is just so heart-warming.
