Imagine being nine years old, playing outside, when you hear desperate cries for help.
That’s exactly what happened to Malachi, a young boy from Sumter, South Carolina.
This little hero didn’t hesitate for a second when he heard his elderly neighbor Allen Clemmons in distress.
Malachi’s quick thinking and bravery would soon turn him into a local legend.
Allen was in his yard, tinkering with his Mustang convertible.
He had propped the car up with a jack and blocks, but disaster struck while he was trying to remove the transmission.
The car slipped and crashed down onto him.
Although the impact was somewhat cushioned by landing on his side, Allen was still pinned under the heavy vehicle.
“I was having a really hard time breathing with it on top of me, even though I was kind of on my side,” Clemmons shared with WIS News.
He began to shout for help immediately, but his calls seemed to vanish into thin air.
His family was out, and his home was isolated enough that his desperate cries couldn’t reach any other neighbors.
Time ticked agonizingly slow for Allen, who was trapped for about 90 minutes.
With each passing moment, his situation grew increasingly dire.
He was running out of breath, and his calls for help had yielded no response.
In that bleak moment, all he had left was his faith.
He began to pray for a miracle to save him.
“I asked God to help me, to give me one more holler and send an angel by my way,” Clemmons recalled.
“The last holler before I give up.”
Just as he was about to lose all hope, Malachi heard him. The young boy was playing outside and was drawn by Allen’s cries for help.
Malachi told WIS,
“He was saying something like he was stuck but I didn’t know what he meant.”
Malachi raced to Allen’s backyard and quickly grasped the gravity of the situation.
Fortuitously, he knew how to operate a car jack.
With Allen guiding him, Malachi managed to lift the car enough to free his neighbor.
As it turns out, Malachi had learned how to use a jack from his uncle, a skill that proved to be life-saving that day.
After ensuring Allen was no longer in immediate danger, Malachi sprinted back to his aunt’s house to summon additional help.
Allen was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated for six broken ribs, a fractured pelvis, and a shoulder injury.
Allen’s doctors were optimistic about his recovery, but what he felt most was an overwhelming sense of gratitude towards the young boy who had saved him.
“I don’t think I would have survived another 30 minutes,” Allen admitted.
“It was getting really hard to breathe. He is truly my guardian angel.”
Malachi’s quick action and Allen’s enduring faith combined to create a miraculous outcome, forever linking these two neighbors in a story that neither will ever forget.
