Michael Sullivan, a dedicated diver, spends the majority of his time beneath the waves, searching for cars related to missing person cases.

South Florida, with its bustling activity, has always been a region of intrigue for him.

Yet, even with his extensive experience, Sullivan was taken aback when he stumbled upon a sunken landscape of dozens of cars in this particular lake.

The magnitude of this discovery was immense.

In a single weekend, Sullivan and his team identified 44 vehicles.

While the majority were in the lake, others were located in a pond across the street, and some were even found in different parts of the county.

Ken Fleming, a colleague of Sullivan, emphasized the significance of their find, labeling it as their most monumental discovery to date.

Many of these vehicles were relics of the past, having been submerged for over two decades.

The sheer number and the duration for which they had been underwater made this discovery all the more astonishing.

The team’s expertise lies in utilizing advanced underwater sonar technology.

This technology aids them in their mission as they collaborate with families and law enforcement agencies.

Their primary objective is to dive into history, aiming to unravel the mysteries of missing person cases that have remained unsolved for years.

Their journey to this lake in South Florida was instigated by the case of Ronald Gilchrist.

Gilchrist had been on his way to the airport to pick up his family but never arrived.

The team’s strategy often involves focusing on bodies of water adjacent to significant landmarks, such as airports, in their search for missing vehicles.

The process of using underwater sonar technology is akin to navigating a pitch-black room with just a flashlight.

They’re quite literally hunting the shadows.

The divers don’t directly spot the vehicles; instead, they identify the shadows cast by these submerged objects.

This method proved successful as the Miami-Dade police managed to recover four of the cars shortly after the discovery.

While two of these recovered vehicles were confirmed as stolen, the overarching mission for Sullivan and his team goes beyond mere recovery.

They are driven by a profound passion to bring closure to families.

Witnessing the anguish of families whose loved ones have been missing for 10, 15, or even 20 years fuels their determination.

When traditional law enforcement avenues come up short, Sullivan’s team steps in, hoping to bridge the gap and provide answers, especially when a vehicle is involved.
