When you’re out in a public place, are you keeping an eye on the situations around you?

Many times, people focus on answering texts or swiping through social media while waiting for a bus or plane. This is completely normal, as it’s not polite to stare at strangers. However, there might be times when being alert could help save a life.

One teen became a hero after noticing a woman was in desperate need of help.

The 17-year-old could tell the woman was in trouble, so he came up with a plan to save her.

Meet Malyk Bonnet. He’s a teenager from Montreal, Canada, who quickly identified trouble when he saw a man pushing a woman near a bus stop. Turns out, she was being kidnapped by her abusive ex.

Malyk told CBC News:

“The guy was screaming at her, the girl. He wasn’t really gentle with her, and I started watching, because I thought he would hit her, so I approached them a little bit.”

At that point, they asked the teen for money so they could catch a bus.

Sensing there was something wrong, he said yes and went with them to get money out at the local convenient store.

When he finally got the woman alone for a brief moment he realized his intuition was right. She told him she needed help to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend, who was holding her captive.

So how could the teenager get her away from her violent kidnapper? You’ll never guess how he did it.

Malyk found himself in a nerve-racking position when the woman told him she was being held against her own will. He also noticed that the violence escalated when they weren’t in public places, so he tried to keep them out in the open.

The teenager followed them, playing the role of the nice guy, just waiting for an opportunity to act.

He got on the bus with the woman and her captor, still, waiting for the right moment.

“My plan was to keep them in a public place, where there’s a lot of people. I decided to make myself friendly with the man, so he would trust me. So I played my game,” The teen told CBC News.

The young man offered to buy the woman and her ex-boyfriend food at Tim Hortons and finally, his opportunity came!

Inside the restaurant, Malyk quickly excused himself to the bathroom and called the police for the terrified woman. They showed up to arrest the man and her ordeal was finally over.

The young man most likely saved the woman’s life. The police recognized him by raising $250 to pay him back.

When it was all said and done, the lady escaped with her life and the kidnapper was arrested. Malyk was hailed as a hero because of his actions.

In a day and age where everyone is entranced by their phones, remember it’s important to still pay attention to what’s happening around you. After all, you could end up rescuing a person in danger.

Malyk got many compliments online, such as:

“You did good and you have good reasons to be proud of yourself. Sadly there’s too many people that just ignores things that you saw weren’t right! You are a true hero!”
