The social media scene is rife with content creators who do things just for the clicks.
But there are those who use the sheer power of mass communication to amplify the call for help and solidarity.
While some content creators dance, sing, or play pranks, one creator decided to use her channel to do good for the people around her. And in turn, she makes her subscribers and viewers part of the charity as well.
A young man named Kevin was playing violin outside a local Target store.
With the talent that God has given him, Kevin was trying to raise money for rent and other expenses. Life and work is especially hard during the pandemic, and it was heavily affecting Kevin and his family.
The sign with him says “Need to help my mum with rent. God bless.” And instead of turning to a life of crime or entering shady business deals, Kevin got his violin and gave the people around him a good show in exchange for spare change.
Then, TikTok content creator Lexy Burke came along.
The TikToker was famously and fondly known as the Serial Tipper. What she does is ask her followers for 50 cents every Monday.
50 cents isn’t really a lot of money but when you ask that from over 800,000 people, the pool just blows up.
Then, by Friday noon, she adds up all of the cents she collected and finds someone who needs that kind of money. It was at that moment that Kades and Kevin met.
She asked Kevin how close he is to pay her mom’s rent.
The young man shyly answered that he has around $175. His mom’s rent costs are $600. That was when Burke made an offer that stunned the young musician.
She asked if a thousand dollars could help him secure the rent. The offer was too good to be true that the musician had to turn off his musical accompaniment for a little while just so Burke can repeat what he just heard.
With Kevin still not believing what was happening, Burke proceeded to explain the challenge to him.
She said that she collects half or a dollar from her followers just so they can help someone in need. Then, the girl right beside Burke began counting the $100 dollar bills in her hand.
For every count, the man takes a step back to figure out if what was happening was real. Then, they gave the money to Kevin, and it left him speechless.
“This is not real.”
Kevin can’t believe what just happened. Just like that, he now has the capability to help his mother and lift some of the weight on her shoulders. It may be just a bundle of money to some, but for Kevin and his family, it was a much-needed lifeline.
He asked Burke for a hug which she gladly obliged. She also explained that the money was not hers and the help came from people all over the world.
50 cents is not much, but when we pool our generosity together, we can make great things happen.
