Through all of the bleakness all around us, two young men proved that there are still a lot of everyday heroes among us.

In Marion, Indiana, a duo is being hailed as heroes in their Grant County community after saving a man even if it endangered their lives.

As they were walking around the neighborhood, Tre Jones, 25, and Marcus Harvey, 24, noticed something alarmingly strange. There was a smell of smoke in the air and it was coming from one of the houses in the area.

“I’m like ‘I smell some smoke. Somebody’s house is on fire,'” Jones shared with WTHR. “There’s people in the front yard, some of them recording.”

As they investigated what was happening, onlookers told them there was a man trapped inside the smoldering house.

Shortly after, they heard a voice from the inside screaming for help. The two of them, puzzled why the onlookers weren’t doing anything, sprang into action.

Disregarding their own safety just to help another person, Jones kicked the door open. Fire, ash, and smoke burst out from the door and blew out to the friends. They were undeterred, however, especially when Jones spotted a spot where he could crawl in.

“It blew out at me. I see a little tunnel area I can duck down and get underneath the smoke. Now I could hear him a lot more clear so I’m like ‘here I come,'” Jones recalled to the news outlet.

He didn’t know where the man was, or how bad of a situation he was trapped in.

All Jones knew was he was in a position to help. As he crawled through the blanket of smoke, he kept calling out to the man so he could locate where the voice was coming from. When that didn’t work out, they started patting on the ground to blindly look for him.

Soon, three men emerged from the smoke as the fire crews charged through the streets.

The victim was 56-year-old Guy Tarlton. He fell asleep while cooking Father’s Day dinner. Unfortunately, the grease caught fire and quickly spread through his house.

Lucky for him, two friends happened to pass by the scene and decided to take action. Tarlton was in critical condition when he was pulled out but was still alive. Tarlton’s nephew shared that his uncle was recovering but 30 percent of his upper body was burnt.

In order to recognize their bravery and show the community’s appreciation for their heroic act, the City of Marion honored them with plaques.

Their actions didn’t only exemplify the best of human nature, but they also saved the life of someone they haven’t even met.

Mayor Jess Alumbaugh stated, “I am truly inspired by the courage and compassion of these two young men who selflessly risked their own lives to save the life of another.”

For Jones and Harvey, however, being called “heroes” is a bit of a stretch. For them, they are just two people doing what humans should do – look out for each other especially in times of great need.

“I don’t say I’m a superhero,” he said to FOX News, “But I’m human. I just help when I can help.”
