It all started during a drive home after work.
Josh and Ms. Darlene were coworkers and like many coworkers, their relationship was professional. That’s why Josh was surprised when he caught Ms. Darlene walking alone one evening while he was on his way back from work.
As it turns out, Ms. Darlene’s car broke down and she simply couldn’t afford to fix it. So she chose to walk 12 miles every day to get to and from her job. Considering that cars.com reports that one repair can cost hundreds of dollars, this can be a huge financial burden.
Well, Josh couldn’t let that stand.
Josh didn’t like what he heard. Ms. Darlene is a sweet member of the office team, so he wanted to help. He rallied his boss and coworkers to pick Ms. Darlene up from work every day.
They would even help her out by giving her rides back home every day. Josh reflected that:
“I took it upon myself to make sure that she had a ride everyday.”
Now, this couldn’t last forever, so Josh took it one step further.
As kind as Josh’s help was, he didn’t want Ms. Darlene to feel like she relied on her team. So his goal was to get her back on the road as soon as possible.
So he started a fundraising account and asked the world to help him raise the money needed to give Ms. Darlene a new car. Now he didn’t expect a lot to come out of it, but he was soon happily surprised.
Once word got out to Ms. Darlene’s neighbors, people took action.
Josh started receiving phone calls from friends and neighbors around Darlene’s neighborhood. Some had even tracked down Josh’s information so they could talk to him directly.
They all wanted to know what they could do to help Ms. Darlene or if they could help make things easier. On top of this, the fundraising earned over $3,000 in the first day alone.
Soon, thousands of dollars were collected which allowed Josh to do what he hoped.
Over the course of Josh’s campaign, over $6,000 was raised. He used this money to purchase a car for Ms. Darlene and presented it to her in a special meeting that was recorded.
You can see how it moved her as she couldn’t stop saying how she couldn’t believe it. At one point she even said that she was confused why people would help her because she believed she didn’t do anything to deserve it.
But Josh said:
“Yeah you did. Anybody who’s willing to walk 12 miles just to support themselves is an encouragement to everybody in the community.”
Today, Ms. Darlene still receives warmth and love from her neighbors.
Josh’s act resonated in the community. Ms. Darlene often told Josh how she could be in the grocery store and people would greet her by name and talk about how they love her. Josh’s kindness in helping his coworker makes for a truly warm magical moment.
