It was just an ordinary day for Cristina Settanni when she saw something that struck fear into her heart. There was a man sitting on the ledge of a freeway overpass thinking about jumping.

The incident happened back in 2019, on a busy freeway where hundreds of passing motorists paid no mind to the man literally sitting on a ledge. No one stopped, well no one except Cristina. She circled back to pull her car over and got out to go and talk to the man.

“I did pass him at first, I didn’t really think about stopping but I thought as I saw him in my review that I probably should stop, especially because no one else did,” Cristina told the Orange Country Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

“I stopped because I’ve been where he was”

Cristina usually wouldn’t have been passing that overpass at that time, she just happened to be running late as if fate needed her there. She went out onto the ledge with him, determined to stop him from jumping.

She opened up to the OCSO about why she stopped, and it’s because she’s been the person on the ledge before.

“I stopped because I’ve been where he was, so I know what it’s like to stand on the ledge and think that’s your only option. He needed somebody to show that somebody cared.” Said Cristina.

When Deputy Shaun Cayer arrived at the scene, he immediately realized what Cristina was trying to do

When you pull up to a scene as an officer of the law you don’t always know exactly what’s going on, but Deputy Cayer could tell by Cristina’s calm demeanor that she was trying to help the man. So he calmly walked up to the man and began talking to him.

“How you doing man? You alright? How you doing? You okay?

To soothe the man, Cristina began reciting lyrics from “One More Light” by Linkin Park

“One More Light” is s song that details exactly what was going on that day. The song is about caring about someone in that situation, even if it seems like no one else cares. It goes:

“Who cares if one more light goes out? In a sky of a million stars. It flickers, flickers. Who cares when someone’s time runs out? If a moment is all we are We’re quicker, quicker. Who cares if one more light goes out? Well I do.”

The man cried as Cristina recited the touching words in the song, and Deputy Cayer pulls him back from the ledge

It turns out the man had let his family down after making some questionable decisions and thought this was his only way out. Thanks to one pedestrian stopping, some lyrics from a deep song, and a quick-thinking deputy, he lived on to fight another day.

There’s so much irony in this situation, especially because Linkin Park’s lead singer Chester Bennington, took his own life back in 2017. To think, he’s saving other people from meeting the same fate through his music, even if he couldn’t save himself is heartbreaking and inspiring all in one.
