When you get into an Uber what do you do?
Sit in the back on your phone?
Keep your headphones in and enjoy your music?
Or do you interact with your driver?
Uber drivers often tend to get ignored or are only engaged in conversations about the weather or traffic.
One woman though, got to know her driver and they have now become great friends.
Katlyn Gardenhire had planned a trip with her boyfriend to Denver, Colorado but when her boyfriends’ flight got canceled due to bad weather, she decided to go anyway.
Katlyn wanted to check out the Red Rocks area and she planned to spend her day hiking and exploring.
She ordered an Uber to get her to the beauty spot and, instead of getting into the backseat, she hopped in the front and started up a conversation with her driver.
Katlyn’s driver was an older man named Robert.
She learned that he was originally from Texas where he worked as a postman and that he was a retired Air Force veteran.
Robert had no family in the city and took on driving Uber as a fun way to explore his surroundings.
When the pair pulled up to Red Rocks, Katlyn could see the awe on his face that was also on her own.
The area was beautiful.
She decided to go out on a limb and see if the man wanted to join her on her hike.
To her immense surprise, the man accepted her invitation and the pair quickly set off on the trail.
For one and a half miles the pair walked and talked, stopping often to take pictures of their surroundings and each other.
When they came across a café, the pair ordered drinks and talked some more.
They eventually made their way back to Robert’s car, but neither of them wanted the day to end quite yet.
They decided to go downtown and grab a drink at a local bar.
After their drinks, they wanted to explore more of what downtown Denver had to offer, so they continued walking and checking out all the little shops in the area, and they even found a skating rink.
After a few more hours together, the pair both realized they were tired and decided to call it a day.
They had walked so far from where Robert had parked the car that they ended up needing to take a bus back to it!
Once back at the car, Robert drove Katlyn back to her hotel as they recapped what an awesome day they had together.
Before departing from the vehicle of her new friend, Katlyn asked Robert for his number and Facebook so the two could keep in touch.
When it was finally time for her to get out and go up to her hotel, Robert asked her for one more little favor.
He asked if it was alright if he could have a hug.
Katlyn happily said yes and the two got out and met at the front of his car for their embrace.
He thanked her for inviting him on her adventure, and she thanked him for accepting.
The pair are now friends on Facebook, and Katlyn says she can’t wait until her next visit to Denver so she can see Robert again.
