Great love starts with a moment of great affection.

Mackenzie and Angela Rafuse didn’t start that way, though.

Mackenzie introduced herself to Rafuse with a smack on the head.

Rafuse and her family gathered in her grandfather’s home one Christmas.

Like anyone who loves animals, Rafuse tried to take a photo with the feline.

In the video, she held Mackenzie close and told her to say, “Merry Christmas!”

From the moment the video started, Mackenzie was already growling. So when the opportunity presented itself, the cat smacked her.

No one knew it would be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Known of her temperament and feisty spirit, Mackenzie found herself at a crossroads when Rafuse’s grandfather passed away.

No one in the family wanted to take her in.

No one wanted to spend their days with a grumpy cat. No one expect Rafuse.

Refusing to surrender her and letting Mackenzie live the rest of her life in a shelter, Rafuse adopted her.

She said to CBC that it was the best decision she had made.

She began posting their renewed friendship on social media.

She showed people the other things that Mackenzie “hates,” like Thanksgiving turkeys, going to the beach, going on road trips, kayaking, or putting on costumes.

And as their relationship garnered attention, Rafuse also noticed a pattern of messages she got from their fans.

She realized that many people also had to make the tough decision of surrendering their grandparents’ cats because they couldn’t care for them.

Rafuse wanted other cats, no matter how grumpy, to have a forever home like Mackenzie.

She then started My Grandfather’s Cat.

Her nonprofit organization seeks to rehome cats once owned by terminally ill patients or seniors.

She said it would’ve helped her grandfather, who feared no one would take care of

Mackenize and thus refused long-term care.

She also shared that the organization was only there to fill certain gaps within the pet adoption system.

With her organization, families have the power to decide.

They get to approve the new owner and won’t have to shoulder any fees in the process.

Since its inception, the organization has rehomed about 100 cats.

It might not be much to some, but for the families of these cats, it meant the world.

It meant the animals their grandparents loved would be treated equally.

As for Rafuse, she and Mackenzie may have started with the wrong claw, but she knew her grandfather was proud of them both.

In one of her posts, Rafuse shared a hypothetical thought from Mackenzie.

The photo showed her and the feline enjoying a quiet time by the beach.

The post was captioned with “I hate you less today, human.”

It may be tough love, but that love turned into something bigger than both of them.
