As we all know, even the best teenagers find themselves in precarious situations from time to time. Perhaps they buckled under peer pressure, were faced with something out of their control, or maybe, they just made a dumb decision. It’s understandable why some adults get upset. But in a lot of instances, perhaps a much better approach would be to use a situation as a teaching tool.
That’s what happened when a teenager crashed into a woman’s mailbox. In this case, it was due to icy road conditions, not something he did on purpose.
Accidents happen.
This winter, many cities throughout the US have been pounded with frigid temperatures and snowy conditions. That includes Lincoln, Nebraska. Even when people try to do their best not to crash, when faced with icy roads, they don’t usually have much control.
Honesty is always the best policy.
When it comes to teens, they often try to dig their way out of a mess. Unfortunately, some of them downright lie. But not one teenage boy from Lincoln. It’s easy to see that parents did a great job of raising him and teaching him to be honest. As the story of his honesty spread on social media, it quickly garnered thousands of likes and shares.
So, what happened.
Driving carefully wasn’t good enough one evening for Owen Sullivan. He did his best to avoid a crash but in spite of that, he mowed down a woman’s mailbox. What makes this young man so unique is that not only did he feel terrible but also responsible.
What he did next was surprising.
Owen could’ve driven off with no one being the wiser as to who caused the damage. But that’s not him. As he explained, he chose to do this instead. “So, I write a little note with some money, and then I go up there, and such a nice lady. I handed her the note and money and she said she wouldn’t take it.”
The woman’s kind gesture didn’t sit well with Owen.
Sure, the woman wouldn’t take his money but the situation kept weighing heavily on his mind. Even more unbelievable, he decided to bake her some cookies. He said, “Well, their mailbox still isn’t right and I still feel bad about the whole thing and so I was with a friend and we were like, we can make cookies, we have time.”
Can you believe that?
Owen could’ve taken the easy way out by buying a box of cookies from the store. But no, he brought her a batch of homemade cookies. The funny thing…he had no idea that everything he did was caught on the homeowner’s surveillance cameras.
She had to share the story.
After telling her husband about the teen’s good deed, Crystal Collins knew she had to share the story with others. That’s when she posted it on her Facebook page. At the same time, she wanted to find out who this teen was so she could tell his mom and dad what a great kid he was.
Jamy, Owen’s mom saw the post.
Crystal summed everything up perfectly. “It was really, really refreshing, there’s a lot of ugly things in this world, and I wanted to share the post especially with his parents.” Within no time, her friends, as well as complete strangers posted comments about this incredible teen.
Jamy’s reaction? She admitted to becoming a little teary-eyed. She went on to say that it feels wonderful to know your teenager is doing good things, even when not under a watchful eye. As for the broken mailbox, the Collins simply bolted it up. At some point, they’ll replace it.
