The saying ‘love is blind’ takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to Emmy and Vic Abrahamson.
In 2006, Emmy Abrahamson, a successful, educated writer, happened to be sitting on a bench in Leidseplein, Amsterdam when a man came to sit beside her. She immediately thought he was handsome, had the most gorgeous brown eyes and oh yes… he was in fact homeless.
Many people may simply have stood up and walked away but Emmy did not. He asked her the time and they started chatting. She remembers how funny he was and how easy it was to talk to him. Emmy would later learn that Vic was living in a bush that had a cardboard floor and a tarpaulin roof.
In an interview with Britain’s This Morning, Emmy spoke about that first encounter and how it led to their unusual happily ever after.
“Vic was the funniest, happiest person I had ever met. His lust for life was mesmerizing and contagious.” – Emmy
Emmy noticed that his clothes were very dirty and he was holding a worn briefcase that she later found out held his sweater, sleeping bag, and alcohol. Despite all this, she found herself laughing and truly enjoying his company.
When Emmy stood up to leave with her friend, Vic simply said “Saturday, three o’clock, same bench” and walked away.
“My friend and I stared at each other, unable to believe what had happened.” – Emmy Abrahamson
Vic recalled seeing Emmy again that second time.
He said to her, ‘I didn’t think you would come. I came to check just in case. And you’re here!’ – Vic
Emmy and Vic shared their life experiences during that second meeting on the bench. Emmy found out that Vic had fallen on hard times after traveling around Europe. One thing led to another and he had ended up with no money and a drinking problem.
Emmy recalled giving Vic her cell number even though he didn’t have a phone at the time. She had to travel back to Vienna but hoped she would see him again one day.
Emmy not only saw Vic again, but they also ended up falling in love, getting married, and having a family.
“Vic is now a mechanical engineer and we live in my old family house in Sweden. Not only have I ended up with the funniest and most wonderful husband, but the twins couldn’t have a better or more loving dad.” – Emmy
“If someone had told me 12 years ago that I was going to end up marrying a homeless alcoholic, I would have presumed they were mad.” – Emmy
The road to happiness wasn’t always easy for these two.
Vic had battled severe alcoholism after drinking to keep warm on the streets. With Emmy’s support and his determination, he stopped drinking and devoted his energy to his family.
“Some people see me as having ‘saved’ Vic, but I think it’s the other way around. He showed me that you don’t need much to be content and he makes me laugh every day. In the almost 12 years we have been together I have become calmer, more easygoing, and have a better sense of humor. And that is all down to him.” – Emmy
Emmy has written a book about their story to inspire others to love unconditionally and not to judge by someone’s appearance but by their character.
“Vic once told me that I was the first person who believed in him. And that’s all it takes. Just saying ‘I believe in you’ can change someone’s world. Sometimes even just making eye contact, smiling, and saying ‘hi’ to someone you wouldn’t usually talk to can change their life. Or yours. You might even end up meeting your Prince Charming.”
