It’s everyone’s worst fear: getting to the checkout till at a supermarket and discovering you’ve lost your wallet.

In best-case scenarios, you realize you’ve left it in your car, or find it in the bottom of your purse. But there’s also a very real possibility that you’ll never see it again.

Unless, of course, a good samaritan decides to do the right thing.

Debra Crosby had reached the point of panic after discovering she’d lost her wallet last month.

While she could pay for her shopping with spare cash, she was more concerned about her drivers’ license, bank cards and military id.

When you lose your wallet, it’s advised to cancel all of your cards immediately, because you never know who might try to use them. With contactless payment on the rise, it’s even easier for criminals to use strangers’ credit and debit cards for their own benefit.

Debra found herself sitting on a ticking time bomb – the longer she waited before canceling her cards, the more at risk she was.

But on her way home, she received a notification saying that someone was at her front door.

She called her son, asking him to check out the footage – and she was surprised to learn that her visitor was a man who claimed to have found her wallet at Walmart.

When the security camera sounded, alerting the man that it was recording, he said:

“Hey, how’re you doing? I found your wallet at Walmart. Ms. Crosby, I found your wallet at Walmart. I’m going to put it by the Amazon boxes.”

The man could then be seen retreating and leaving Debra’s wallet in a safe place in her front yard.

What was amazing about the man’s act of kindness is that he went the extra mile to reunite Debra with her wallet. He didn’t just hand it in to customer services – he wanted to make sure she would get it back as quickly and as safely as possible, so he hand-delivered it.

Debra told CNN that the drive to her home from Walmart takes 20 minutes, so it wasn’t a quick journey for the man, either.

He had no reason to care for Debra, a stranger to him, but he still gave up his time to do the right thing.

Debra was keen to show her gratitude to the man, saying:

“I’m thinking wow this is super. He didn’t leave his name. He didn’t do it or the fame or fortune. He did it, I guess, for the right reason. It made me feel like what I’ve known all along that 99% of people are great, even though sometimes we focus on that 1% that do the wrong thing.”

For several days, the good samaritan chose not to come forward, despite Debra’s story hitting the headlines. But then, as reported by First Coast News, a man who identified himself simply as Johnny made himself known.

Recalling the moment her hero called her while she was at work, Debra said:

“I answer and I hear this guy say, ‘Hello? Mis. Crosby? This is me, the guy with your wallet.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I was beginning to think you were truly an angel, because no one could tell us who you were.'”

Johnny had initially been hesitant to come forward, but his friends eventually convinced him to.
