Randy was the love of Debra’s life. They had been married for almost 45 blissful years.
That’s one wedding and 45 Valentine’s Days together for the Tenneys of Arizona. Their love was one that withstood the test of time.
So imagine how devastated the couple was when they learned that Randy, 65, had cancer.
They believed their love would see them through the diagnosis and treatment of glioblastoma, a rare brain cancer, but fate had other heartbreaking plans.
“We thought we could have a big birthday party for him. We thought we could have Christmas, you know, Thanksgiving. We got none of it. It was so, so hard. We kept praying for miracles, and just nothing went right. We just didn’t get any of the miracles we wanted.”
In December 2019, Randy sadly lost his battle against cancer. Debra was grief-stricken without her best friend and husband by her side, day after day, hour after hour, sitting with her at the kitchen table and riding with her in the car.
Together they raised eight children and made a lifetime of memories. Every single Valentine’s Day, Randy made sure Debra knew just how much he loved her. He would treat her to flowers and a poem, a gift from the heart that she cherished each and every year.
As February approached and Debra continued to put one foot in front of the other just to make it through the day, she realized for the first time in almost 45 years, her beloved wouldn’t be there to bestow her with a bouquet of flowers and a poem.
That thought compounded her grief almost to the point of being unbearable. So imagine Debra’s surprise when, on Feb. 13, she was presented with a bouquet of yellow flowers and a poem.
It was the very last gift she’d receive from Randy.
The couple had a very good friend who happened to be a florist. Before Randy passed away, he made the florist promise to take care of Debra on Valentine’s Day for him.
The widow was caught on camera the moment she received the beautiful arrangement crowned with a single red rose. It was accompanied by a poem that read:
“Roses are red, Violets are blue, Yelling from Heaven that I will always love you. With love from your eternal Valentine, R.T.”
Debra immediately burst into tears of joy.
“When I walked over and opened the card, I couldn’t even control myself. It was, it was him. I guess you could call this my real life ‘P.S. I Love You’ miracle.”
Their son Jeff said it was exactly what his dad would have done had he been alive to celebrate the holiday with his mom.
“She knew right away they were his because of the yellow flowers. He had this saying that he loved to scatter sunshine. It was his life motto.”
Facebook users couldn’t believe how Randy had prepared for Valentine’s Day in the afterlife. Wilma Murphy marveled over his compassion.
“What a lovely thing to do for a loved one that you know will be grieving for you…an angel!”
Widow Nancy Scandrett Muzzy shared how, even after 12 years, Valentine’s Day is one of the hardest holidays for her, too.
“He would always come in with a big smile and a special gift he had chosen for me. He died of a glioblastoma, too, after nearly 46 years of marriage.”
Shelly Alter proclaimed how Randy’s gift honored his wedding vows. Sally Moore described Randy’s thoughtfulness as a “special heartfelt act of love, thoughtfulness and compassion.”
“I hope it brought her some comfort despite I’m sure some tears.”
Diana Martinez shared that this past Valentine’s Day was her first in 34 years without her husband, too. She could relate to Debra’s sorrow.
What a beautiful gesture symbolizing true love that doesn’t fade even after the spark has been extinguished.
