We’ve read stories of hostage or kidnap victims using pizza delivery notes to get rescued.
But this restaurant never thought they’d ever experience something like it.
It was just a typical Sunday early morning at The Chipper Truck Cafe in Yonkers, New York. They were open 24 hours so it was not unusual for them to receive a delivery order at 5 in the morning.
What was unusual was the note that came with it.
Usually, customers added requests for extra soda or extra syrup in the notes. Or they’d write their specific instructions on where to leave the order on the notes.
An order came in for an Irish breakfast roll and a beef burger and, on the notes part, they said, “please call the police… please don’t make it obvious.”
The employee who took the order was confused and showed it to her co-worker.
“The message came in, and the girls read it and they called my husband to see what they should do,” Alice Bermejo, the restaurant owner, said. “He told them, let’s call the police, we can’t take any risk or chance.”
The police were called and they arrived at around 6:20 am at the address listed on the order.
It turns out a 24-year-old woman was being held hostage at an apartment in the Bronx by 32-year-old Kemoy Royal.
The police have arrested Royal and charged him with rape, strangulation, criminal sex act, unlawful imprisonment, menacing, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and sexual abuse. It turns out Royal would use dating apps to find women, bring them to his apartment, and commit these crimes against them.
Royal was also involved and charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, and assault for a separate case involving a 26-year-old woman a week earlier.
“God knows how many times he’s tried to do this if not for this girl’s quick thinking,” Alice Bermejo said.
The Chipper Truck Cafe couldn’t help but share about this incident on their Facebook page.
“I’ve often heard of this happening but never thought it would happen to us. Thankfully we were open and able to help her,” they wrote on their Facebook page. “A big Thank you to the Police for their fast response.”
The owners and employees of the restaurant had no idea what happened to the woman until they got a call the next day from her thanking them.
They were very happy she was rescued and recovering.
Meanwhile, the owners are extremely proud of their employees for their quick thinking.
“Once we pack the bags and send it out, that’s it. The fact that they saw that before they sent it out, they couldn’t just left it as the driver’s problem. But they didn’t,” Alice Bermejo remarked.
The 24-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
