There are a lot of home remedies and tricks out there that claim to get rid of hiccups. Although none of them have been proven by science, anecdotal evidence suggests that they actually do work for some people.
But for Lisa Graves, nothing worked. And she’s been hiccuping for a very long time.

From biting into a wedge of lemon to putting a pinch of salt under her tongue, nothing – absolutely nothing – could get rid of Lisa’s hiccups.
“I initially tried every hiccup remedy in the book – people making me jump, sucking on a lemon, literally everything,” Lisa told The Sun.
She has tried every method under the sun to get some relief. She’s gulped down glasses of water and even asked people to sneak up on her and frighten her.
It all began when she fell pregnant with her first child.

Even normal bouts of hiccups are incredibly annoying for most people because you have absolutely no control over them.
Now, can you even imagine hiccuping for 14 years straight? Lisa first began hiccuping after she fell pregnant with her baby girl, Emily, in 2008.
But what she thought were normal hiccups at first just didn’t go away.

Lisa gave birth to a perfectly healthy little girl, but the infuriating hiccups persisted, so she decided to get medical advice.
After numerous tests – including an MRI, EEG, and trips to specialist neurologists – doctors were baffled.

Thankfully, the doctors found nothing wrong with Lisa, but they came to the conclusion that the persistent hiccups could be caused by a stroke she had when she was pregnant.
But that doesn’t stop her from living a relatively normal life.

Lisa, who is from Lincoln, now has around 100 hiccups per day.
“I can hiccup in the middle of a conversation, and it can be loud – most people say it sounds like a dog being stood on, although I’ve recently had people say it sounds a bit like a chicken too,” Lisa told The Sun.
But she has come to terms with her unusual condition – even though her hiccups are so loud that they continually surprise her clients and colleagues.

Lisa is a self-made woman. She owns her own nail salon, has won multiple international awards for her nail art, and hasn’t let her annoying condition hold her back at all! In fact, she’s become quite used to the hiccups.
“Now though, I’ve grown used to it. There was a time when I’d feel quite embarrassed about it, and would put off going out in public, but now, I just get on with it,” she explained in an interview with Mirror.
She is also sure to warn anyone new she meets so that they know what to expect.

Lisa’s strange case is extremely rare, however, she’s nowhere near beating the world record for the longest bout of hiccups – that title belongs to a man named Charles Osborne who hiccuped for 68 years!
“I think I’m likely to be hiccuping till my grave – but it’s become part of me now,” she told Mirror.
But, even though she’s been hiccuping for 14 years, she still considers herself lucky.

“It can wake me up in the night, and sometimes my husband too, but it’s only a minor inconvenience,” Lisa told The Sun, “Knowing what happened to me during my pregnancy for no reason, I’m lucky.”
