It’s common to see a person down on their luck and want to lend a hand. Perhaps we pass on a few dollars, donate food, or offer to help complete a task. But can you imagine being able to do something that would make a huge difference in their life?
One woman did not hesitate when she met a family in desperate need of help; she put her thoughts into action and gave them a surprise they would never forget. You’ll never guess how she turned their holiday season, and their lives, around.
Virginia Finch lives with her family in Greeley, Colorado.
On Thanksgiving, she and her daughter prepared food to give to the homeless. When she learned of another family that lived behind a nearby gas station, she decided to deliver a meal to them.
She could never have expected what she would find when she turned around the corner.
A family of five was living in a broken down, partially converted bus. Olivia and Eric were struggling to survive, along with their three daughters who were ages 5 years, 14 months, and 4 weeks at the time. They had been traveling across the country when the bus broke down. Now, still stuck, they began to fear for the oncoming winter.
“We didn’t think we were going to have a Christmas at all,” Olivia explained to The Denver Channel. “We would have been lucky if we had enough food, or if we got jobs at that point.”
They had given up all hope that they would be able to pull themselves out of this situation, and it never crossed their minds that someone might save the day.
Olivia gladly gave them the food, but she knew she needed to do more to help this family. “There’s no way I’m going to leave a baby with no crib for a bed on Christmas,” she decided. This family needed a home – and fast.
To the ordinary person, giving away a home is almost unimaginable. Luckily, Olivia and Virginia crossed paths for a reason. She had just finished fixing up a second home, with the intention of selling or renting it. Instead, she did something truly amazing.
Virginia gave the family the home – rent free!
She knew that they were struggling to stay afloat, and she wanted to do something that would help them in a big way. She even collected items to fully furnish the home. Eric and Olivia could not have been more grateful.
“I just didn’t think it was real,” Olivia shared. “I thought it was, like a cruel joke almost, ’cause who does that? Nobody does that.”
Virginia became the family’s angel because of her generous act of kindness, which helped provide them warmth, safety, and a beautiful Christmas too. Olivia explained that it also “restored her faith in humanity.”
Providing a house for a stranger might not be something most of us can do. However, there are still countless other ways to spread kindness and help those in need.
