Cara Brookins found herself a single mother of four children without the ability to afford a home to fit her family. Instead of feeling helpless, Cara Brookins decided to rise above her situation and find a solution herself. So, she bought a piece of land and started watching YouTube tutorials.

Cara decided if she could not afford her own house, she was going to build it herself.

Cara found the strength to leave an unhealthy relationship to start over with her children.

“My kids and I had been through a really tough situation and when we left we were pretty beaten down and destroyed. We kind of needed something big and we also needed a place to live,” Cara explains to Inside Edition.

If she was looking for a big project to help her family get back on track, building an entire house from scratch was the perfect project. The family purchased an empty plot of land and went straight to the internet for help. The family took it day by day as they learned how to build their own house.

Cara’s four children were 2, 11, 15 and 17 when they first started building their dream home.

Cara explains that her children felt that their lives were just as out of control too. Most kids would not want to spend an entire nine months building a house from scratch but these kids felt the opposite. Cara’s children wanted a new start at their own lives and jumped at the chance to rebuild their own lives through building their new house.

Cara and her four children were all ready to create a new beginning and knew it would take hard work.

Cara was able to receive a loan from a bank and the family quickly got to work.

“We had been through so many tough things, that we were all kind of in survival mode…We were just bruised and scraped and sore everywhere, everything hurt for that full nine months,” Cara recalls.

The family might have been sore and tired but they never gave up.

The Brookins family learned how to pour cement, frame walls and windows, set foundation, create safe plumbing, safe gas lines and so much more.

They learned all of this through watching YouTube tutorials. The family knew there would be moments of failures but that did not slow them down. They just kept learning from their mistakes and kept at it. By the end of nine months Cara and her children built a 3500 square foot house that consisted of five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a three car garage.

By building a house together the family of five was able to rebuild their own family and lives.

Cara states, “Every day, my kids and I wake up surrounded by proof that our minds and our bodies can do incredible things.”

Once Cara realized her true strength inside, she has wanted to share it with others.

Cara has written a memoir, Rise, about her family’s incredible story. She has also become a motivational speaker through her story and strength. Cara knows that if she could rise from her pain than anyone that is struggling can too.

“You can have exactly the life you want. Are you ready to build it?” Cara challenges.
