Considering everything that’s happening in the world, times are tough right now. Although there’s a lot of darkness, that doesn’t mean there’s no hope. And when you hear about some of the stories of strength and faith coming out of this horrible pandemic, it makes things seem a bit more manageable.
Of course, we’ve all heard that younger people are ending up in the ICU. But just imagine being in that situation when you’re about to give birth. That sounds terrible, right?
One woman’s story
Vancouver resident Angela Primachenko woke up on April 6. The last thing she remembers is being pregnant. But now, her belly was flat. Shortly after waking up, she learned she’d given birth while unconscious.
She had the novel coronavirus
Around March 25, Angela started feeling unwell. She had a fever. And since she was 33 weeks pregnant, that was a pretty big deal. After all, being sick could put her and her baby’s lives in danger.
Heading to the hospital
After the onset of her symptoms, Angela decided to go to the hospital. Ironically, she went to the same hospital where she works as a respiratory therapist. Because of her symptoms, she was tested for COVID-19. Unfortunately, the test came back positive.
Things began to worsen
From there, things went downhill. She started feeling worse. Then, on March 29, she was so sick, doctors placed her in a medically induced coma.
She gave birth a few days later
When Angela gave birth on April 1, she was still unconscious. Despite the challenges, the doctors managed to deliver her baby girl. She was named Ava, which means “breath of life.” That seems like a fitting name considering how this little girl came into the world and the type of work her mom does.
Her sister posted about the struggle online
Naturally, Angela’s family was extremely worried about her. Who wouldn’t be? The concerns were so great that her sister, Oksana Luiten, shared the story online, expressing how difficult the situation was to deal with.
She wrote, “My twin not only survived Covid-19 but also gave birth while being under an induced coma, I know, we all didn’t even know that’s possible. Feels surreal posting a picture with Angela next to me. The last two weeks I wasn’t sure if I would ever take a new picture with her.”
Even with her faith tested…she got through it
Oksana Luiten continued with her post, “Thank you to EVERYONE for your prayers, it was a dark time, I doubted and questioned my faith and God, I felt so powerless and so fearful and out of control. But that’s how faith grows, going through times of uncertainty and seeing God gently calm my spirt again and again…and now seeing the end…I stand in awe of God. He is good.”
Doctors applauded when Angela left ICU
Angela was in ICU for a long time, but she’s out now. It must’ve felt like a huge accomplishment because doctors and nurses in the hallway all started clapping for her when she left intensive care. She captured the heartwarming moment on her Instagram page.
She’ll soon join her family
For now, Angela won’t be able to leave the hospital until she tests negative for the coronavirus…twice. But after that, she’ll get the chance to reunite with her family. Most importantly, she’ll meet little Ava.
Ava’s family can’t wait to get her home
Ava is still in the NICU for now. But soon, she’ll be going home. She’ll be joining her older sister who’s only 10 months older than her. The day they’re all reunited will be a happy one.
