Showing the people in our lives that we appreciate them is an act that seems so small, but can truly have a profound effect on someone’s self-worth, as well as their sense of the positive effect they have on your life. Sometimes they really need to hear it, and sometimes it’s just good practice to make those special people in your life realise it regularly. Of course, it’s not always as easy as just saying “I appreciate you” if you’re really trying to get the message across.

It’s much better to tell them specifically, and from the heart.

Let’s take a look at some of the ways we can communicate our appreciation to people.

1. Show them a little love.

We may appreciate the people in our lives who ask us if we’re okay regularly, but one way that we can reciprocate is to return the favor. Asking them if they’re doing fine is the best way to show them that you notice how much they support you, and that it’s a two-way-street. Let them know that you understand what they do for you, and they deserve the same treatment.

2. Let them know you’re proud of them.

A surefire way to communicate appreciation for someone important being in your life is to show them that either as a person, or for their particular talents, you are very proud of them. They don’t have to be a “rocket…surgeon”… for you to say that you’re proud of them either. Sometimes it’s enough to just say that you’re proud of the person they are and the position they hold in your life.

3. How do they inspire you?

We should all appreciate the ways in which our loved ones give us that extra push to achieve the things we want. It’s one of the simplest ways you can help someone, to breathe a little inspiration into someone’s day. It also happens to be one of the simplest ways to let these people know that we appreciate them. Recognising that influence that they have on you lets them know you’re paying attention to what they’re doing for you.

14. Back them up.

When the time comes, you’ll need to return the favor yourself and tell them that they have what it takes to achieve what they’re setting out to do. By being their wingman in life, you can communicate that you know how much they do for you. It also shows them that you value them in your life and you genuinely want them to achieve.

5. Don’t be afraid to apologize.

Letting someone know that you appreciate them can be done in subtle, every-day ways. One of these is to not shy away from accepting responsibility when necessary. Of course, if you are not to blame, don’t accept it. But sometimes taking responsibility when it’s required and right shows someone that your relationship with them isn’t all about you.

6. Do they make you a better person?

One of the best influences you can have on someone is by actually making them a better person through your actions, advice or setting a good example. It’s what we hope those close to us will do. So letting people know that their influence on you as an individual in the world is positive can mean a lot to them.

7. Some challenges are positive.

Pay attention to the ways that the people in your life challenge you on a regular basis. When they’re challenging us to be the better people, or to reach for our goals or to do a little better, it’s an act of kindness, so long as they truly have your best interest and happiness at heart. Let them know that you’re grateful to them for keeping you on your toes and doing the best that you can.
