Most of us don’t have a personal stylist to help pick out our clothes. Instead, we select things on our own, all with the goal of looking good and feeling confident.

But let’s face it, unless you’re a fashion expert, it can be hard to know what you really should be wearing to look and feel your best!

Right off the bat, Joann throws a popular piece of clothing out the window… Leggings! She says:

“You have to be careful because first of all, you want to be age-appropriate. Secondly, you don’t need to show everything.”

The old black bathing suit.

A lot of women have the misconception that a black, one-piece swimsuit is the way to go for looking slimmer. But according to Joann, it’s not! She explains:

“All it does is make a perfect silhouette … With a black suit, I’d still know exactly what your body looks like. Where as, if you have a suit with a medium print going on, or beautiful colors, it breaks up that definite line and fools the eye.”

Vertical lines, horizontal lines, angles, and more.

The Wardrobe Woman goes through each one of these categories and what type of illusions they create. For example, angled lines on clothing typically “slenderize” a person, whether it be the stitching, a v-neck, or diagonal stripes.

As for “round” clothing features? You’re definitely going to want to hear this one.

When picking out an outfit, usually you’re not looking for something that will make you appear heavier. But if you choose clothes with details like a round neck, round pockets, polka dots, paisley prints, etc – that’s what’s happening!

Joann gives an excellent tip to remember:

“Anything with a round design to it will add pounds no matter where you put it. Round adds pounds!”
