In the United States, we often hear about the importance of valuing and thanking our veterans.

However, the reality is that many veterans struggle with accessing adequate healthcare, mental health services, and housing.

Despite government efforts, it’s frequently up to nonprofits, fellow veterans, and everyday Americans to ensure these heroes don’t fall through the cracks.

Veterans United Home Loans, an organization committed to serving veterans, chose to honor Bill Day, a veteran and single father, in a remarkable way.

They decided to pay off the remaining balance of his mortgage.

Bill, unaware of what was in store, agreed to appear in a commercial for the company.

The news of his mortgage payoff was delivered by none other than actor Gary Sinise, known for his role as Lt. Dan in “Forest Gump.”

Although not a veteran himself, Sinise has a strong connection to the veteran community.

Bill Day, who joined the Navy in 1988 and served until 1991 before joining the Navy Reserves, was completely unaware of the surprise awaiting him.

Bill’s military service included time in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm and assisting the Coast Guard in drug busts in Mexico and Central America.

He was honorably discharged in 1996 as a signalman, third class.

Despite the benefits of the GI Bill, owning a home was still a financial stretch for Bill, a single dad of four, one of whom has severe autism.

The financial challenges faced by veterans like Bill are significant. A 2019 Pew Research Center article revealed that one-third of veterans struggle with bill payments post-military life.

Veterans United Home Loans aimed to alleviate some of this burden for Bill by forgiving the substantial amount still owed on his house.

Bill’s reaction to seeing Gary Sinise and hearing the news was priceless. “Gary! Holy crap! How ya doing!” he exclaimed, followed by disbelief and humility.

“No, I don’t deserve that,” he said, only to be reassured by Sinise that he indeed did.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Bill shared the challenges he faced with his autistic son and how this gesture would significantly help his family.

He was one of 11 veterans who had their mortgages paid off.

Feeling a deep sense of gratitude, Bill expressed his desire to give back, planning to donate to the Gary Sinise Foundation and help other veterans by providing affordable housing.
