Social distancing can be hard, especially when our elderly relatives are involved. It’s difficult to stay apart from the people we care about, even when we need to.

We still need to find a way to keep that personal connection, even if it means skipping out on the hugs. It’s about adapting and finding a way through a difficult time while still showing just how much the people we love are in our hearts.

As we are finding out, sometimes even a stranger can come in and make all of the difference. This one utility worker managed to do just that.

He found a way to help a mother and daughter connect.

Across the gate

A woman was getting as close as she could (a little more than ten feet) to her mother by singing to her elderly mom (and her nurse) over a gate. She was doing the best she could to offer comfort and company without getting too close.

The assisted living facility can’t allow visitors during the coronavirus crisis, so standing on the sidewalk and speaking and singing over the gate was the best she could do to cheer her mom up while abiding by the rules.

A beautiful voice

That’s when she heard some singing from across the street. It was so amazing that it made her stop.

A utility worker, Albert Jones, had been singing himself, along with the music he was listening to with his earbuds while he worked. While the family he was about to meet didn’t know it yet, Albert frequently sings in church and has a nursing home singing ministry.

It’s like everything was just meant to be, and the universe brought them together in that moment.

A willing participant

When the woman invited him over to sing for her mother, he was happy to oblige. He removed his earbuds and came right over to stand on the sidewalk and sing over the gate as well.

He began to sing an amazing rendition of His Eye Is On The Sparrow to the elderly woman and her caregiver as they stood on a path inside the gate. His voice filled the air with well-practiced and from-the-heart power and soul.

Even the elderly mother joined in for a few lines of his song.

Mission accomplished.

Taking it to the internet

The woman, who he would find out was named Sarah Ditmars Cahill, took out her phone and began to record the poignant moment. The moment was so perfect, and his kindness, as well as his voice, had left her in awe. She needed to share it with more people.
