It has not been easy for the past year. Much of what we’ve heard and seen has shown humanity at its most heinous.
However, there are happenings that genuine kindness is still alive.
It can be found in the most unexpected places, such as a tire shop in Richmond, Texas.
A kind Texas State Trooper secretly assisted a 92-year-old woman. He decided to pay for a new set of tires for her car after learning she couldn’t afford them on her own.
The chance meeting happened at Integrity Tire after Mary Summers, 92, arrived early to have her tire repaired, according to KHOU.
Omar Oregueda, the shop mechanic, informed her that she had a nail in her tire and that he would be unable to repair it.
“The tire on her vehicle wasn’t repairable and the other tires were shot,” Oregueda said, adding that the other three tires were cracked and unsafe. “They were already completely destroyed.”
Summers needed a new set of tires, which would cost more than $600, to make her vehicle safe and dependable.
However, it was more than the elderly woman could afford.
“I said, ‘Well, I can’t do all the tires. I can just do the one. Just tell me how much the one tire is going to be,’” Summers explained.
Trooper Drew Stoner of the Texas Department of Public Safety (TDPS) was waiting for an oil change.
That’s when he overheard Summers’ conversation with Oregueda.
“I’m thinking, ‘What if she goes out on the road and a tire goes out on her [or] kind of falls apart on her, and she’s on the side of the road?’” Trooper Stoner shared.
Trooper Stoner stopped at the front counter before leaving the shop. He paid for a new set of tires for the elderly woman without saying anything to her.
He quickly exited the establishment.
Shortly after, Oregueda informed Summers that she would be leaving with four brand-new tires.
She was completely taken aback.
Summers told the news outlet,
“He said, ‘They’re paid for and everything.’ And I said, ‘Who paid for it?’ And he said, ‘The trooper that was in here.'”
She expressed surprise that the trooper had done something so nice for a stranger.
“I can hardly talk about it now because I want to cry because he did that,” she continued. “And he did it, and he left.”
Summers was desperate to thank Trooper Stoner, so KHOU went in search of him.
He told the news outlet that he didn’t want any attention, but he was delighted to meet Summers.
During the heartwarming exchange that followed, the elderly woman hugged him.
Summers told Trooper Stoner, “I’m just so thankful for you, and I’m so proud.” “I’m proud to meet someone that has a heart that big. I just love you to death.”
Oregueda, moved by Trooper Stoner’s selfless act of kindness, ended up giving Summers a free oil change.
“For a stranger to take care of another stranger like that – let’s all just take care of each other,” Oregueda said. “That’s what it’s about.”
