Animals are more intelligent than we think. Even though they can’t speak, they frequently find other ways of communicating with us — even asking us for help.

One man experienced this exact thing when he was passing by some railroad tracks and noticed a squirrel on them.

On closer inspection, the little animal wasn’t just passing the time. It was actually stuck. And then, it did something unbelievable: it actually reached out and begged him to help free it.

Nick Allen was just planning on going for a stroll.

Instead, he ended up getting to witness a moment with a wild animal that touched him emotionally.

The little squirrel was frantically trying to climb over the tracks but simply couldn’t gather the strength to clamber up.

Allen was worried that if he reached out to pick the squirrel up, it would panic.

“I absolutely wanted to help the little guy over the rail,” he said. “I was a bit cautious, as I wasn’t sure how safe it was trying to touch the little guy when trying to help him.”

So, he was stunned when the wild animal started to climb up his pant leg. Clearly, it recognized that he was someone who would be willing to give it a hand — and just possibly saves its life.

Allen couldn’t believe his eyes.

He had never expected a wild animal would reach out to him in trust and ask for help.

“When he climbed on my leg, I absolutely thought, ‘This cannot be real at all,’” he said. “This wild little critter just crawled onto me. I have to be dreaming or something.”

But it wasn’t a dream.

It was trust and a will to live that conquered the little squirrel’s natural instinct to stay away from humans. The animal remained clinging to his leg as Allen moved away from the train tracks, then hopped off and scampered up a tree.

It may have been the squirrel’s lucky day, but it was Allen who came away from the experience feeling grateful. He said he was oddly humbled by the squirrel’s trust in him, and happy that he was there in its moment of need.

“It made me feel so pure and loved that this little guy needed some help and just hopped right onto this random human,” he said. “I felt trusted. It was just so pure. I know I’ve been in spots where I couldn’t get out without a little help, and all I needed was a little helping hand. Or in this case, a helping leg.”

Thankfully, Allen stopped by while the tracks were still quiet and was able to help the squirrel get to safety.

He never expected a quiet stroll to turn into an experience he’d never forget. As for the squirrel, it’s safely back in the trees, having learned a lesson about train tracks — but also, possibly, about human beings.
