Think about the crossing guard you see on your commute, or who helped you get to school in the morning as a kid.
It was always the same person, and you probably knew them somewhat well, but crossing guards don’t typically get a lot of love from society.
They’re often forgotten as soon as we grow out of school or no longer take our kids to school.
Last week, though, the team at East Idaho News got together and decided to do something nice for a crossing guard who has become a community staple.
She was well deserving of praise.
Crossing guards are important members of society and help kids get to school safely.
One’s especially loved by her community.
Vicky is a crossing guard in Idaho Falls. She’s been at the job for 32 years, and she seems to love it.
Vicky stands out because she is extremely friendly and always waves at passing cars. In her interview, she constantly cracks jokes.
She says that the kids are her favorite part of the job, when she talks about them she refers to them as “my kids”.
She’s pretty dedicated to her work, working morning, lunchtime, and afternoon to help kids cross the street safely, so it’s good she loves it.
She goes way back with her coworkers.
Vicky says she knows all of the kids she helps get to school – especially the bad ones.
She also has known the school bus drivers for years, saying that she’s worked with their kids, and now for some of them, their grandkids.
Vicky loves her job
In fact, even with so many years under her belt, it looks like she’s never stopping.
East Idaho News asks her a number of questions while she’s on the job, and one, in particular, shows how much the community loves her.
When the news anchor asks if she’s ever planning on stopping, she says:
“Well, I usually say another year or two, and then I have a mom say ‘Well can it wait until my son is out of sixth grade?’ And then it just goes on and on….so at least six more years!”
A big ‘thank you’ is in order.
She got a sweet gift as thanks for helping out young people all these years.
A tiny package full of gifts.
In the video, the news anchor hands her a package. In it are a bunch of gift cards that she can use for a few different places.
In addition to an Amazon gift card, she also got a restaurant gift card that she can use at multiple select restaurants.
She was touched.
But she didn’t let it get in the way of working and helping “her kids” cross the street.
When the anchor gives her the gifts she looks down at them at seems genuinely pleased.
After saying a quick and earnest “thank you!”, she looks out at the street and notices that it’s time to get back to work.
With a little more pep in her step, she runs out onto the street to hold up traffic and help some waiting kids cross the street.
