In my opinion, it should go without saying that when visiting a place of respect, you give that respect, no questions asked.
When that setting is a tombstone of an unknown soldier, giving respect should not be optional.
While people can have a variety of opinions on the military, one thing to keep in mind is that at the end of the day, they are men and women who put their lives on the line to keep your freedom and safety intact.
It is an incredibly noble and honorable gesture to sacrifice your life for your country, and this gesture is not one that can be easily repaid.
Not everyone may feel as strongly about this though, as seen in the video below.
A soldier was guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns, a monument in Arlington National Cemetery that overlooks Washington D.C. Also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the monument was found in 1941 and went on to honor American service members whose remains could not be identified.
Typically, this area is one where people come and reflect in silence. I imagine the atmosphere around the monument must be a little heavy, given what it represents.
However, one group of visitors seemed to be unaware of their surroundings.
A group of tourists were heard laughing at the Tomb of the Unknowns, catching the attention of the soldier honorably guarding the area.
This soldier, having a respect for his fellow fallen soldiers, decided to intervene.
“It is requested that everyone maintains a level of silence and respect,” he powerfully states in the video below.
Moments after the soldier makes this solemn declaration, the area is silent. Needless to say, his request was heard loud and clear.
If you listen to the way the soldier speaks in the video below, do not mind his powerful voice. This highly disciplined soldier was not acting out of anger, though his demeanor may seem intimidating.
Instead, he was acting out of respect – first my demonstrating it, then requesting others follow his example. The tone he used is one that soldiers commonly use to make their orders heard loud and clear.
The soldier ultimately did what he felt was right. Though it may have been a bold and brash act, sometimes people need to be reminded to be mindful of their surroundings.
