Rita Wilson posted on her Instagram, and Twitter accounts a photo of Tom Hanks handing her a cake with beautiful icing flowers and a frosting that said, ‘Happy Anniversary.’
Her caption was short and sweet, but it says it all – “love is everything.”
And the way Tom looked at her? We could all wish someone would look at us the same way!
Tom and Rita’s relationship started as co-stars and friends.
They originally met in 1981 on ABC’s show Bosom Buddies.
Tom was still married during this time, but he and Rita instantly became friends because they loved talking to each other.
As Rita would put it, she loved how Tom was a great storyteller and always made her laugh.
The two reunited in 1985 when the pair starred in a film together.
They played lovers in the film Volunteer, and their chemistry was undeniable.
However, it was only in December 1986 that they made their relationship public, a few months after Tom and his wife broke up.
They filed for divorce the year after, which paved the way for Tom and Rita’s next big step.
Tom and Rita got married on April 30, 1988, and it was the beginning of a fruitful marriage.

They starred in the 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle (as siblings!), co-produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and their recent project A Man Named Otto, where Tom played the main character and their son, Truman, played the younger version of Otto while Rita produced the film.
The two have shared their ups and downs, proving their undying support for each other.
They attended each other’s Walk of Fame Ceremonies, Tom’s Hand and Footprint Ceremony, Rita’s Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago, multiple movie premieres for Tom’s movie, and Rita’s music career and single launches.
Aside from the good times, they were there through their most challenging moments, like when Rita was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction, and the couple fought COVID together.
Their 35 years of marriage may be filled with highs and lows, but they knew they would always have each other.
When Access Hollywood asked what the ‘secret’ to their marriage was – they shared a few sweet details.
Turns out, it’s humor, acceptance – and Tom making Rita’s morning coffee every day. Aww!
In an interview with Oprah, Tom said:
“I won’t deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn’t magic — the way it’s shown in movies. But we both know that no matter what, we’ll be with each other — and we’ll get through it.
